Uhle's Crushed White Burley
(3.50)
The same blend of tobaccos as our long favorite Blend #255, only a slight bit less aromatic. Almost a true White Burley - natural taste yet ever so slightly aromatic for grand aroma. You'll like it even if you're a non-aromatic smoker.
Notes: Savory and leafy with a hint of sweetness, the subtle note of licorice in this blend sits lightly on the palette. Ingredients: Cube-cut burley and licorice Cavendish

The white burley provides some wood, a bit of nuttiness, a touch of cocoa and has a slight, dry floral quality. The cavendish has been topped with a deep licorice that tones down the burley while creating an interesting contrast that interacts well with the burley’s aspects so the smoker taste buds well notes all the flavor characteristics inherent in this mixture. The licorice does sport a light soapy quality that weakens by the half way point, and mostly dissipates in the last third of the experience. The licorice itself only weakens a mite toward the finish. The nic-hit is just past the mild level. No chance of bite or harshness. This cube cut blend burns cool, clean and a little slow with a fairly deep sweetness from beginning to end. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs some relights. Has a very pleasant after taste, and can be an all day smoke.

I was given a healthy sample of this at the last Chicago show from the fine folks at Uhle's and really enjoyed it. It is a great change up for the burley lover as it has a slight anise taste to it that really sets it apart from the standard burley/Virginia blends out there.
Uhle's really knows Burley and they do it well. I have had trouble deciding which of 00, blend 300 and perfection plug burley I enjoy the most. Now after sampling Crushed White Burley, the choice has even got more complicating. What is a piper to do? I guess I will just have to buy a good amount of each to cellar.
Although I did have about 7 or 8 bowls from this sample, I am just holding it at 3 stars as of now and will revisit it later as I intend to buy more. This may very well be a four star blend. I would call it 3.5 if it were an option.

Well, I will reiterate that this does have a bit of a floral essence, possibly licorice but it comes off as floral in the bowl. It's really what some people refer to as "soapy" in the English sense like in many of the Gawith Hoggarth tobaccos. This soapiness is not as pronounced as it is in some of those blends, and it is fairly well balanced in my opinion. Some people may not be able to tolerate it. I like it well enough. It's not my favorite tobacco, but there's nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. The tobacco itself is great as usual in Uhle's blends, the cut is excellent, etc. I just much prefer Perfection Plug, which is my favorite tobacco right now.
