Holy Mother Nightshade! This tobacco is a punch to the forehead and cardiovascular system with its unholy levels of nicotine. I regularly smoke ropes and flakes, and this one yields nicotine at the level of a Peterson's Irish Flake or a Gawith Hoggarth Brown Bogey.
This one confused me. Is it a burley? Is it an English? Would this be a crossover?
As it seemed to be what I was seeking at the time, and based on high reviews and low availability, I jumped at the chance to buy a half pound when www.smokingpipes.com put all their C&D bulks on a 15% off sale.
I hope this ages well, because straight from the bulk bag it was very rough around the edges. It burns well and relatively cool, leaves nearly no detritus at the bottom of the bowl and is generally well-behaved. My wife never complains about room note, even when I smoke strong English mixtures...but this one nearly got me evicted from my own home. I don't find the room note to be disagreeable, but I am the one smoking it.
I believe that if jarred and aged for a year or two, this one will improve and become much easier to smoke. For now, this will be reserved for those rare moments when I'm trembling from nicotine withdrawal. 2 stars; I see the potential here, but for now it has been relegated to my cellar.

Came a ziploc from C&D as part of a sampler. Chopped flakes, alternating shades of milk- and bitter-chocolate and had a slightly-sweet smell. I smoked it 4 times over 5 days in a new MM General because I kept trying to like it and really couldn't. The smoke begins with a false, papery, acrid note, which reminded me of Backwoods convenience-store cigar. This note diminishes during the first third of the bowl but never disappears entirely.
Other tastes begin to appear during the first third of the bowl and gain more intensity as the smoke continues. Coffee, carob and honey with a tiny whiff of sulphur. They would be quite pleasant without the occasional return of the "Backwoods essence." The taste lingers more as a residue than a continuation of the smoke and remains despite tea and a bite to eat. I'm starting to think I don't like Burley, since this "Backwoods flavor" keeps nagging me when I smoke tobacco that has burley in it. If you don't have that issue, this would be a great tobacco.
It's fairly strong, somewhere between GH Dark and Brown Flakes. It's nice, but it has some irritating angles, not least that it won't leave when its welcome is out. I never found myself looking forward to another bowl. Its nicotine content is its saving grace.

I'm still wondering about this blend. After four ounces, I still do not know whether I like it or not. Don't get me wrong, I do like it, but there seems to be something missing here. I think the condimental tobaccos are too light. They could easily be bumped up without any harm to the base of Burley.
The packing is not a problem because the leaf is so silken and soft to work with. The lighting is easy and the smoke is thick and rich. The acridity of the burley is not tamed completely here. That is what I meant about the condimental tobaccos. This could be smoother and more tasty if just a tad more Latakia and Turkish were added. The perique is not a problem here, the level seems just right.
For what it is worth, I will not be buying more. I think they missed (IMO) with this one by the slimmest of margins. I could add the extras myself, but that isn't why I buy tinned blends. I don't want to do the alchemy myself. Sorry to rain on the admiration parade here, but I just think this was meant for the ardent Burley fan alone. Cheers!

I personally liked this one -- not enough to buy again, but I enjoyed the two-ounces that C&D sent as part of a sampler pack. If there was ever an example of truth in advertising, this is it, as this blend is ridiculously "big" in the taste department and it's almost completely about "burley," with just a hint of condimental leaf. As much as I enjoyed this, though, I can't in good conscience give it three stars because it strikes me as being a niche tobacco. A few of us -- those who really like obscenely powerful burleys -- will like this, but it's probably not going to be a pleasant experience for the other 99 percent of pipe smokers (if nothing else, the nicotine level is almost dangerous). I highly recommend this for folks who like strong burley flavor and effect, but not recommended at all for anyone else.

This one just didnt do it for me. I agree that this is a full blend you wouldnt want to smoke all day. I could barely detect the latakia, perique or turkish in this blend as they are in such small quantities. The burley has a good flavor to it but the overall experience is fairly one dementional to say the least. Others had refered to the cigar like overtones, if I want a cigar after a meal, I would buy a cigar. I didnt care for the cut of this as well, it was similar to loading up with a bag of gravel. This is in no way meant to discourage anyone from the C&D line (as this is the only one that I have tried that didnt work for me personally) The quality of leaf is fine, and Craig is putting out some awesome stuff. Big-n-Burley and me just didnt hit it off.

This is a rough cut blend that is easy to fill the pipe with. I did have some difficulty with burn. A number of relights were needed, but this did not detract from the experience. In looking at this blend, I would never guess that Latakia is a feature. There just was not a lot of black leaf in my particular bulk sample. While not a bomb, the Latakia Provides some smokiness and adds to the earthiness of the burley. The oriental leaf adds to the bouquet and sidestream. The Burleys are king in this blend, and they are earthy and strong. If I tried to explain this blend simply, I would say to imagine a light Balkan, say EMP. Dump all the VA out and replace it with stiff burley, spike it with Perique, and voila, big AND burley. I enjoyed this tobacco cocktail mightily, but there is a bit too much strength to make for an all day smoke. Just as L/S M.F.T. C&D means fine burley.

True as the name suggests:big and burley! I can only smoke this occasionally when I need a nic shot. But it is a good quality burley blend. I can't recommend it to all except for those who like it really Big and Burley.
