Popped open my first tin of this and was almost overwhelmed by the strong Anise aroma. (Licorice). Initial light gives a strong Anise taste over the tobacco flavors. Appears to be strong stuff, and I like strong stuff, but prefer natural tobacco flavors, rather than a topped blend.
I am still forming my opinion.
Update #1 Another day, another pipe, still the same. Strong Anise aroma from the tin, Anise coming thru in the smoking of this tobacco. I could really do without the Anise topping.

Even for an old salty dog like myself, this leaf was definitively overwhelming in taste in strenght.
I salute the impeccability and quality of the flake, the subtle sweetness in the tin aroma, but lighting up was a bit too much for me. Before 1/2 of the bowl, I almost had the hiccups!
I will revisit when my tastebuds are less prominent thant at the present time.

I love Kentucky for it grants character and a good nicotine kick but this is one is gonna kick your butt!!! If you are a guy that smokes warriorplug or 1792 you will stay on your feet for rounds. But if you are into mild strength aromatics prepare for a knock out in the first round!

I have tried 3 bowls of this. I like the flavor of this, but find it harsh on my throat probably because I smoke too fast. If you are a fast smoker or have a sensitive throat probably not for you.

When Mac Baren made it, it was awesome. The new STG blending lacks body and stength.
You used to get a nice subtle hint of what tasted like anise in the MB blend, that is non-existent in this new version. This is now a mediocre blend.

This is a pleasant dark flake, seeming to sit between the more heavily scented dak flakes such as St Bruno and it's ilk, and the more lightly flavoured, burley heavy plugs in the Irish tradition. It's on the stronger side, but I don't find it overwhelming - it satisfies.
On opening the tin you find some very neatly cut and stacked dark brown slices, exactly on the EU regulation 1.5mm thickness, so completely uniform that you could use them as a set square! The aroma in the tin is of rich nutty tobaccos, with raisin and date, a hint of liquorice and just a drop of some liquor, Irish Whiskey? There's only a hint of fired leaf in the aroma. Certainly bodes well.
It's quite moist, rubs out fairly well, but can easily be packed too tightly. It benefits from some drying time after rubbing, but take care: it doesn't take long to dry to a crisp. Even when it does it smokes OK, so don't worry too much.
It takes two matches to light when moist, one can suffice if you've dried it well and put some crumbs of "kindling" on top. It will need a few relights regardless. The flavour is nutty and hearty, with only a hint of sweetness. It's not complex, I don't detect many subtleties, but it's full and satisfacory. There isn't much flavour development through the bowl, this isn't a tobacco to pay close attention to in this regard. As such it's quite nice to get on the go when working on something, except that the need for relights can be a nuisance. It can give just a hint of tongue bite, something that surprises me in a stronger tobacco. The aftertaste is nutty, slightly ashy.
All in all, a nice enough dark flake with satisfactory strength. I expected to like it more, as I'm a fan of this style, but it's burning characteristics detract somewhat from what could be a pleasant "background" smoke. Personally I wonder what it would be like in "plug" format, as it could be shaved much thinner and might stay lit better, I do enjoy the Irish plugs.

I smoke, at present, Nightcap, Escudo, JackKnife, and SG Full Virginia Flake. All pretty hairy-chested smokes, but this here I.F. pretty much burns out the nerve endings in my poor nose. I like the flavor. No nonsense. Nothing pretty. Deep and earthy. So I give 2 stars because I know that there are many of y'all who really like to tie on the nic hit and go for the max in body and depth. But my poor nose. It begs me to lay off.

All this talk of getting bowled over by the strength of this blend aroused my interest not impressed by the nicotine or the tobacco will not buy again. Taste is similar to a cheap, harsh Tuscan cigar.

The Irish Flake tin clause “recommended for the experienced pipe smoker” must be read as “with an extremely high nicotine tolerance”, because this weed packs a gigantic vitamin N dosage. I think it may be possible to have a real nicotine overdose with this one, so be careful. As with the rest of the tin description, it really tastes like “unspoiled tobacco”, which could be great experience for some smokers. In this direction, I think the taste of this flake its great: very dark, pungent, earthy and with some superb woodsy-sweet virgininan notes. The only fault (in my opinion, obviously), as I have mentioned, is the nicotine level. To put this matter on perspective, suppose that, in a 1-10 scale for strength, 1792 Flake gets a 6, and Irish Flake gets 11
