Initial lighting I gave this great caramel taste with a hint of latakia english. It was one of the smoothest smoking and lighting I have ever encountered. It smokes long and light if you choose.

The strength was of a mild english. Towards the end the caramel kind of faded and turned into something that reminded me of 965, and a strong C & D english.

The main taste I got was caramel however. The Latakia kept it smooth, and smokey, and complex.

The room note was good, but weird. The wife described it as nougaty, and woodsy, but enjoyable. I enjoyed it.

In the end it was a great smoke, and one I would highly recommend to all smokers.

When I write a review, I like to smoke a few ounces to get a good feel how a tobacco will behave in different pipes, in the house/car/outside, etc. When I sit down to actually write the review here I like to be smoking that particular tobacco as I collect and share my thoughts.

Pouch aroma/appearance:

Light to medium colored ribbon cut tobacco, with huge, I mean huge chunks of black Cavendish. Perfect moisture content the day it was delivered. Aroma of sweet nougat, some vanilla/caramel and maybe even a bit of maple, along with smooth burley are forefront. Very little tang of the Virginia, and a slight smokiness of Latakia. My mouth waters as I inhale.

Packing/lighting:

Packs nice, except you have to be deliberate how and where you decide to put the Cavendish chunks. I sometimes like to layer the Cavendish pieces for a pleasant surprise as the cherry hits the chunk and delivers a jolt of sweetness. Lighting takes place in fair order, due to the terrific moisture level.

Flavor/smoking:

Flavors of nougat, caramel and a bit of maple are most prevalent, and definitely transfer from the pouch aroma! Not much Latakia in this blend, but enough to know there is some added. It is balanced superbly, and somewhat complex.

This blend literally makes my mouth water. A lot of tobaccos leave my mouth dry and ashy feeling, but this blend leaves a welcomed silkiness on my tongue and roof of my mouth. A fairly mild blend, I can see this being a great "shoulder blend" in the late summer/early fall. By shoulder I mean I transition from VaPer's and a few aro's in the summer to full English in the fall and winter. I'm sitting here in the living room as my wife watches AGT on TV, and she hasn't aborted the couch, so the room note but be ok. LOL! As a matter of fact, she just said it smells good! Burns clean and cool to a fine ash. The burley really comes out in the final third as the flavoring has subsided, but hasn't disappeared. Very little moisture in the heel of the pipe as well. That's great!

All said, I really like this blend and would have no problem recommending it to you fine folks. A definite 3.5 stars!

Cornell & Diehl - Sweet English.

As you can see from the picture, Sweet English is presented as quite a well rubbed ribbon. As it's from bulk the moisture's just right, the pouch has allowed it to 'air' and reach an impeccable hydration. There's a delicate aromatic aroma, but nothing to imply a heavy casing.

The smoke: it lists, here, liqueurs, brandy, whiskey, etc., but they escape me. The added flavour I detect the most readily is caramel. This marries the smoke with the name Sweet nicely. The vanilla's definitely subordinate, in comparison; it gives a slight creaminess, but is a few leagues behind. I don't find the Latakia behaves in a Bomb-like fashion, at all. In all fairness the tobaccos collaborate together in a fair enough fashion to give quite a smooth flavour; no sharpness, or incisiveness, but impartial and tasty. The only issue that I note is the speed; a forceful puffer would find a bowl goes way too fast.

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: pleasant.

Sweet English? A tasty blend that does justice to three stars:

Recommended.

Picked up 4 ounces just on the name alone. Seemed right up my alley, English with a smooth top end. Well, I was not disappointed, this blend is just about perfect if there is such a thing. Tried this in two different pipes and the result was the same - very mild with just a note of Latakia to let you know it's an English blend, but then it turns just slightly sweet with the addition of the topping, which happens to be one of my favorites. It's easy on the bite and can be smoked anytime. The 4 ounces will go fast so I will be buying more.

Being a stick in the mud traditionalist, I really should hate this...But, oh brother,...When I received this and opened the bag I was hit by a strong vinegar odor...Well, at least I only ordered an ounce to sample...Lit-up, sat back and this is one of the most delightful C&D blends I have ever smoked...How in the world did I miss this until now?...Definitely in rotation.

I received a sample of C&D Sweet English in my TinSociety box. This is not a blend I would have probably picked out to sample on my own.

Typical C&D ribbon cut. Nice mix of colors. Smell to me had a topping I took as some sort of liquor. Easy to pack and light. I picked up on the caramel really quickly and it complimented the other tobaccos. Burned cooler than I expected and was quite enjoyable.

Is it something that wowed me enough that I'd buy it for the rotation, not really. Is it a good smoke, yes.

C&D does great work I smoke quiet a few of their blends. However this is the worst blend I have ever smoked that didn't come from a cardboard box at a drug store. It's not sweet and barely detect any Latakia in the blend. Room note is fair, the taste is hard to describe, I guess bad is the best I can say. I smoke English blends and this is a blend of its own. Burns hot and a strong bite. To each his own and this gets high reviews but I don't like it at all.

Smoking now:

Note this is not a “sweet” aromatic despite what the name says so let’s get that out of the way.

Pouch note smells like butter. Imagine going to your county fair, getting a box of popcorn with extra butter on top. Then walk over to the 4H barn, stand next to some cows, and smell your popcorn. It’s delightfully “agricultural” as one reviewer wrote, haha, I’m going to steal that descriptor. It’s topped with a caramel and vanilla topping which is evident in the pouch. Tobacco is the perfect moisture. It’s actually almost to the point where it starts to crunch so no dry time needed. In fact an ounce of this by weight was so voluminous that it wouldn’t all fit into the normal container I put one ounce samples in. Packs snd lights flawlessly. I did notice this blend burns fast.

The caramel topping is noticeable without being sickly sweet. The Virginias come to the top with their grassy hay sweetness. The burleys give off a woody nutty flavor that goes well with the topping. The Latakia is there but it’s just a small amount like ketchup on a burger. Provided a floral and smokey note that goes well with the topping. The cavendish probably toned it down a bit to provide an enjoyable aromatic smoke. Retrohale tingles the nose very little and you’ll notice the Virginias. Burned clean, a very little moisture, no tongue bite but a little mouth tingle. Did notice this blend burns fast. Smoke slow.

This is an aromatic all day, don’t let the name fool you. It’s not “sweet” like other cross over blends but it’s a flavored aromatic with Latakia in it. The Latakia is a nice touch, the topping is enjoyable, and these are the reasons why I will smoke this again.
