G. L. Pease Laurel Heights

(3.21)
Rich, ripe, red leaf forms the base of this wonderful Virginia blend. The flavors are deep and round, with a smooth, natural sweetness, and subtle notes of orange peel, roasted oats, leather and peat. The smoke develops richness as it progresses, delivering a long, clean finish, that is never cloying or syrupy, with hints of malt and grapefruit. For lovers of darker, natural, unstoved Virginias.
Notes: The Gregory Pease website mentions just a trace of latakia - Laurel Heights was released in March, 2006.

The tobacco in the tin is varied colors of ribbon, some yellow, but more orange and medium brown with a smattering of black and darker brown. Smells like a rich virginia blend, but with a hint of smokiness.

Easy to load and light using standard packing method and 2 light method. Kept lit with minimal light tamping.

The smoke was intriguing to me as the flavors seemed quite light at first but become more pronounced and rich as the bowl progressed. It had the typical flavors of a straight virginia blend, those of some fruit, grass and hay, some toast and woodsy notes. But these weren't as 'sweet' as a lot of my usual/favorite VA blends. There was some sweetness, but it was more subdued and there were some floral and incense-like tones that gave it a more savory feel, but not overwhelming. I didn't detect any latakia, but there was a touch of smokiness, though this is common with most VAs from time to time. It was a good blend....maybe not one I would grab a pound of, but it's interesting and enjoyable.

I'm not sure what I can add to this, except if someone wants to experience Latakia, this might not be the best blend to do it with. I get hints of latakia on the exhale, but I wouldn't have been able to identify that flavor if I hadn't had English blends before.

I wouldn't characterize this as an English, but an unfussy Virginia.

Opening the tin, one is greeted with a light brown ribbon cut that smells Virginia with earthy qualities. Moisture is drier, but that can be a great thing!

This would be a great place to start if someone wants to experience red Virginia without a topping.

I'm not sure I would buy another tin as I don't crave this tobacco, but if someone is stepping into the world of Pease it is a must try.

Tin note of mildly sweet hay. Tobacco cut not Ribbon. There is some fat ribbons, but the rest is indiscriminate rough cut, with chunks as large as a 2-inch square after unfolding the leaf. I guess older tins may need some attention with "trimming" some pieces down. Moisture content is fine. Burns slow with many relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and somewhat consistent, with notes of mild tangy orange, sweet grass, earth, bread, floral, sugary dark fruit, wood, musty leather, spices, a mildly lemony background note, and a mildly peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Latakia on leave to visit family far far away. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is good.

There‘s not a whole lot I can add to the tin description. I get mostly red Virginia in typical C&D/GLP fashion. I also taste a fruity bitterness, slightly reminiscent of grapefruit or orange peel. It has a nice and very natural sweetness.

I could not find any Latakia in my sample but I‘m sure there‘s at least a trace of it in there.

Great quality and it burns down well. A must try for lovers of red VA. Has some strength to it. Unfortunately my mucous membrane (is that what you call it?) doesn‘t agree with red VA (mild tongue bite). YMMV.

This blend required some experimentation before I found out how to best smoke it.

The tin note brings up a bit of earth, hay, and citrus, with only a bit of leather and fire from the Latakia.

Once I smoke the blend, however, I notice that it definitely has more than just a trace of Latakia. It's very noticeable.

Best enjoyed smoking slow in a larger bowl. For me, best smoked in a medium-large Canadian pipe. For full enjoyment, this needs to be sipped and really tasted, the same way you would do with a fine spirit. Only then all the flavors are felt and appreciated.

What I get is a layer of citrus sweetness, some spice, and some smoke from the Latakia.

It's a ribbon cut, easy to pack and smoke. Doesn't change a whole lot during the smoke. Moisture level is perfect out of the tin. Maybe one relight. Can be an all-day smoke.

Medium-full in body, medium in strength. Nice bit of complexity between sweet, spice, and smoke. While for my personal taste I'd tone down the Latakia just a bit, the balance overall is excellent.

Paired really well with any Whiskey or Brandy I got on hand.

For those who enjoy Latakia as a condiment for Virginia, rather than a Latakia-focused blend, this should be very enjoyable. I admit that I truly learned to appreciate this once I found the right pipe and cadence. I still can't give it a perfect score because I'm not sure I'll buy more of it anytime soon. But I enjoyed it very much and I think that you should try it.

Being a new pipe smoker this was the first "real tobacco" I purchased after buying a pouch of captain black which BTW was a terrible tobacco to start off with. I for the most part enjoyed this but I am a uber novice without a lot of exposure yet to many types and/or blends. Tin note reminded me of chewing tobacco; basically a sweet natural tobacco smell. The flavor was fairly mild and tasted like what I would consider a true tobacco with a slight sweetness. The first bowl I had was in a brand-new poker style pipe I picked up when buying the tin and I overdid it (mainly with my pace) and got a little "green" from it. After a few days I smoked several more bowls and have enjoyed it for the most part. No tongue bite so far and it seems to smoke fine using either traditional or frank style of pack. Stays lit pretty well too.

This one is a very good blend, but something prevents me of giving it four stars. I can´t find anything wrong with it (except perhaps a certain harshness on the throat), but I wouldn´t have it in my regular rotation either. It happens sometimes.

Should age very well and one day I will buy some tins for that purpose.

good tin description.smoke carefully to appreciate the taste and avoid bite.much better with a few months aging after opening the tin,i transfer mine to a mason jar. i don't think it is similar to any other pease virginia's apart from the obvious similarity of blends from the same type of leaf.if you really hate this you obviously don't like virginia tobacco.

Just finished my first can of Laurel Heights. I've been smoking it from a Don Carlos two note bent bulldog. In fact, I broke this pipe in with LH. On another online pipe forum, I saw someone joking that GL Pease should give free tins to anyone who detects the flavor hints that he indicates on the tin, well, recently upon having a big fat bowl of this stuff, I TASTED THE HINT OF GRAPEFRUIT! I was so excited that I told my wife and naturally, she looked at me funny.

This is a rich, yet simple blend. It is a little plainer than the English/Balkans I generally favor. Perhaps my tastes are skewed for this reason, because though I can see tiny flecks of latakia here and there-- I mean it's like the dash of tabasco I always add to my famed spaghetti sauce-- I can sense its presence more than I can taste or smell it. It's simply there to wake up the flavors.

Kudos to GLP for once again blending a wonderful pipe tobacco.

The blend is very much true to the tin description. It really has become one of my favorite Virginia smokes. From Char light to finish, you get a mélange of tastes from malt to citrus, with nary a nip or touch of bitter. Not a sweet blend, it?s a wonderful testimate that Greg Pease knows his Virginias as well as his Perique. Mild to med in Strength, I?ve had it in a small Bulldog to a large Meer and it behaves no matter what you throw it in. Over all a great companionable smoke. Can?t go wrong. P.S. "If" there is Latakia in this, It's in the same proportion I like vermuth in my Martini's....Just walk the vodka glass by the Vermuth bottle, and hand it over.... Cheers!
