G. L. Pease Laurel Heights
(3.21)
Rich, ripe, red leaf forms the base of this wonderful Virginia blend. The flavors are deep and round, with a smooth, natural sweetness, and subtle notes of orange peel, roasted oats, leather and peat. The smoke develops richness as it progresses, delivering a long, clean finish, that is never cloying or syrupy, with hints of malt and grapefruit. For lovers of darker, natural, unstoved Virginias.
Notes: The Gregory Pease website mentions just a trace of latakia - Laurel Heights was released in March, 2006.

Much as I like a good Virginia, this blend feels rough. I’m all for experimenting with blends and assume the Latakia here is just that, as it feels less than a condiment.
Grass. Hay. One would have to reach to get citrus. Medium strength.
I like a good range of tobacco and LH is fine. Not a go to. Older reviews laud it and I honor those folk. Everyone is different. For moi LH is just not … interesting enough.

So that represents Pease’s goal. I don’t get any malt or grapefruit or orange peel or sweetness. Probably I’m not sophisticated enough.

I had the pleasure of smoking a 3yr old and a 16yr old tin. My final rating will lean on the fresher tin
Prep: Ready to go. A bit on the dry side if anything (though my tins were aged)
Notes: I must say that the tin description was on point. Orange peel, grapefruit and leathery notes were noticeable. Though deemed a red virginia based blend, it holds plenty of grassy/citrusy notes. Deeper fruity notes are noticeable throughout the smoke. The Latakia is faint but noticeable in the background.
Age does wonders to this blend and turns it into a rich, earthy, stone fruit, blend. But the rating I'd give it fresh would be 7/10. It's fine, but not an immediate pick.

This review is based on a five-year-old tin.
I found this tobacco to perform best when dried out extensively and packed tightly (ala the Frank Method).
This is a pleasant smoke, consisting, of course, of the finest quality tobaccos. It burns evenly and has a decent, satisfying nicotene content. And as for value, I got almost 30 smokes from it (compare that to around 15 in the same pipe rotation for Sam Gawith flakes).
However, to me there is nothing special about the composition. It is a fine example of a run-of-the-mill genre, in my view. Just a grassy, earthy, very slightly sweet flavor, with an added subtle smokiness from the latakia. That may be heaven to some smokers, but not my cup of tea. I need more sweetness, and especially needed is some spice and a rounder, more leathery flavor, or perhaps some brightness.
