Cornell & Diehl Bayou Night
(3.09)
A Scottish type blend of Latakia, perique, Virginias, Turkish, and burleys that boasts a heavier perique component than normally found in a classic Scottish blend. A full smoke that is surprisingly cool on the palate.
Notes: A full strength perique blend with a generous portion of stoved red Virginia, Latakia, Turkish and rough cut burley.

If I had to choose a favorite type of blend, I'd probably pick Scottish-style even though I've only tried a handful of them so far. Bayou Night is right there with the rest of them, but the large amount of perique makes it sort of an oddball compared to regular Scottish blends, like Aperitif or Black Mallory for example.
Being an oddball is not necessarily a bad thing, of course. In this case the big dose of perique adds a fruity flavor and aroma that goes well with the other components while adding body to the smoke.
50% perique sounds like too much for a Scottish blend, and it dominates the tin note. In spite of this, the flavor is well-balanced and easy to smoke, which I think is because of the fruity, plum-like character of the perique used here as opposed to the more peppery type. Still, if you dislike perique you might want to avoid this blend.
This is one of the few blends that has been a regular in my rotation and I recently ordered 4 ounces of it. That's not much for a lot of you guys, but it's twice as much as I usually buy when I order bulk and tells you how much I like this stuff.

I bought 8 ounces of this last August pretty fresh with a date of 7-19-18. This definitely has the tin aroma of Perique. This smokes more like a VA/Perique blend with me not detecting any Latakia. If it had not been described with it, I would have never known. The tobacco still has some slight moisture to it after being jarred for about a year. This has a straight forward tobacco taste and reminds me of a milder version of Daughters and Ryan’s Picayune. I enjoyed it with my coffee on the porch and if you are a Perique fan give this one a try. A little cigarette-ish if that makes any sense but not in a negative way. The nicotine did not seem to be too bad and probably more of an evening type blend. And like other reviewers have said this blend is on the opposite spectrum of their Bayou Morning, like night and day, pun intended.

I didn't even make it all the way through one bowl. This stuff tastes like someone unrolled a pack of American Spirit cigarettes, and dumped it into a bag. That's the most accurate description I can give it, so yeah, its a little harsh. I work with a bunch of cigarette smokers, I'll give the rest to one of them in case they want to hand roll. This is the first tobacco I've tried that I just straight up disliked. If you love perique, maybe you can tolerate it.

Where's the Latakia in this? I like bold tobacco blends. I like Burley. I like Kentucky. I like Virginias. I even like Perique (in fact, I love Perique, in proper doses, and when properly blended). I’ve tried to come to terms with this blend over and over again, hoping my taste buds would "grow up", but I always find it harsh, hot, dry, inhospitable, forbidding and just plain nasty. There are folks who rave about Bayou Night -- and I am happy for them -- but my palate simply refuses to cooperate and/or submit, therefore, I cannot recommend. 0-stars.

This is a Scottish English blend the is not really notable. I have found it to be a little bitey. I will not be smoking this again.

Amazing stuff! This Blend is a perique lovers dream. this is what I expected from Kajun Kake, and while it is enjoyable, bayou Night came out as the clear winner. wonderful spice and a rich temptress of a smoke. Great for unwinding after a hard day at work and listening to the soft melody of spring peepers on the porch. The spice can be overwhelming upon first light and instantly transports you to the colorful landscape of Louisiana (Is that an accordion I hear?) but quickly settles down to play nice. whole, hearty flavors open up midbowl and smooth spice reigns supreme backed by the slightest hint of sweetness keeping everything in check as all the flavors begin to spin and meld. While not a frequent smoke I savor this for special occasions when nothing else hits the spot. I think I may be in love with this blend, and now I'm off to make way for a creole wedding!

It takes an MASTER to make a blend with 50% Perique this smooth. Even looking at the tobacco before lighting can be intimidating. The granulated Perique is almost all you see. The dry, mushroomy, fruity, and spicy pepper flavor from the Louisiana condiment leaf is present at every moment during the smoke. The Latakia is barely noticeable for me. The burley is nutty with some bitterness and adds some strength. The Turkish/Orientals add some wood and exotic spices. The red Virginia adds a nice sweetness to round out the blend. All the components work together in harmony with a dark chocolatey note. Bayou Night is easy on the palate but sometimes a little sharp through the nose. A great full-strength complex blend that somehow remains smooth.

This blend is pretty good. The perique content makes this blend very similar to a cigar with a pepper spice. Now if this had some Maduro leaf blended with it. I think I'll throw a little Billy Budd in with it next time to give that flavor some creaminess. But great on its own and smokes very very cool.
12-20-15. I decided that along with adding some Billy Budd, that I would also put a little bit of Pirate Kake to give the Latakia some more beef. Next time I'll try it again without the Pirate Kake but the combo turned out pretty good but still need to tweet the ratios.

After finishing the Tin, my pipe is was left with a strange dank odor that no other tobacco has left (ghosted) any of my pipes with. This tobacco actually bored me the more I smoked it. The combination of flavors is hard to describe, but it did remind me of cigarette smoke far too much and the throat irritation never left no matter what beverage I tried to pair this tobacco with. The burleys were a bit too much, I think. I won't be buying another tin or smoking it again, at least not in the near future. Too much bite and scratchiness of the throat and mouth.
**UPDATE** It's been years (7 actually) since I wrote this review and think, based upon all the positive reviews, I would give this tobacco another go for at least 1-2 bowls to see if perhaps my nose and palate were just too immature at the time. We'll see.

A full strength Perique blend? My tin sure was not.
The Latakia nor the Turkish ever made an appearance. In all honesty, this blend is flavorless, uneventful and well...boring. No detection of any nicotine at all. Literally, was like smoking air. Maybe I got a bad tin? While I really enjoy many C&D offerings, this is not one of them.
