Cornell & Diehl Bayou Night

(3.09)
A Scottish type blend of Latakia, perique, Virginias, Turkish, and burleys that boasts a heavier perique component than normally found in a classic Scottish blend. A full smoke that is surprisingly cool on the palate.
Notes: A full strength perique blend with a generous portion of stoved red Virginia, Latakia, Turkish and rough cut burley.

I bought 8 ounces of this last August pretty fresh with a date of 7-19-18. This definitely has the tin aroma of Perique. This smokes more like a VA/Perique blend with me not detecting any Latakia. If it had not been described with it, I would have never known. The tobacco still has some slight moisture to it after being jarred for about a year. This has a straight forward tobacco taste and reminds me of a milder version of Daughters and Ryan’s Picayune. I enjoyed it with my coffee on the porch and if you are a Perique fan give this one a try. A little cigarette-ish if that makes any sense but not in a negative way. The nicotine did not seem to be too bad and probably more of an evening type blend. And like other reviewers have said this blend is on the opposite spectrum of their Bayou Morning, like night and day, pun intended.

I will start off by saying that I quite enjoyed this blend. I believe it is the first ‘American/Scottish’ style blend type I have had (the description and what TobaccoReviews has it listed as differ here) and I will likely try more in the future due to how much I liked this one.

The tin note for this one is quite interesting as the first thing I can pick up is the smokiness that I usually recognize from the Latakia present in English type blends, but it is quickly pushed aside by a nice tangy/sweet note from the other component tobaccos; overall quite pleasant.

To my palate it seems pretty well balanced between most of the components, with only the Virginias and Orientals seemingly relegated to the background. The Latakia is always present but not so much so that the Perique can’t make itself known and the earthy and dark qualities of the Burleys provides a pleasant base to break up the strength that the Latakia and Perique tends to provide. While I feel the Virginias and Orientals are not particularly present in the flavour profile they are definitely somewhere in the background and help the Burley to quell the aforementioned strength and punch of the Latakia and Perique. If you don’t enjoy Latakia or Perique dominant tobaccos then you likely won’t enjoy this one.

This is definitely an aptly named blend and fits well as a nighttime smoke, being quite strong both in terms of taste and nicotine content. It is a nice change from the usual English mixtures of Lat/Or/Va and is quite enjoyable.

I enjoyed this one and to me this is a solid 8/10 but not quite 4 stars, if I could I would prefer to give it 3.5/4 but alas I cannot.

A stout blend. It smells like cheddar cheese in the bag. Tastes playing back and forth between sweet stewed fruits and sour spice. I don't detect any latakia at all just burley, Virginia, perique and orientals. I think this is actually the unpressed bulk version of captain earle's honor blend. Good stuff.

This one has too much going on to get any nuance. Powerfully strong blend and it all just kind of gets strong and muddy. Then, the nicotine content makes me sick. I smoke when I want to get dizzy.

An interesting blend of tobaccos leads to quite a nice blend from C&D. The combination comes together nicely in the taste and also the room note. You may get a couple compliments out of the passing crowd. It comes at the right moisture level when just opened and stays moist for quite some time afterwards. It will give you a nice load of nicotine to keep things lively. All in all recommended.

This is a nice blend on the fuller side. However, the perique over powers the other components. It has a deep dark fruit (figs, plums, etc) note with a little spice (this is normal for me, if a blend has a lot of perique, the dark fruits are forward and the spice is less) and sweetness. I do get some nutty/woody notes in the burley. The VA's are tangy but only come in and out occasionally. The Lat. is smokey as expected and does play a constant role in the background of the perique. The Turkish is also a little spicy perhaps or this could just be from the perique.

I think if this was simply a VA/Per, taking the other components out and replacing them with more Red's and Brown's that this might be a great blend. As it is, the perique dominates to the point that it takes away from all the other elements leaving the whole somewhat less than the sum of its parts. Still a good blend overall and recommended to anyone looking for a very perique forward blend.

not much to add--all has been said before--this blend is tasty, smokes dry--burns evenly-

it did have a bit of heat and bite when i smoked it in a wide bowled pipe, but switching to a bulldog's conical bowl completely eliminated that problem-- seemed to get a fuller flavor in the 'dog also--a hint of nose tingle; a very earthy tobacco--believe i'll stash away a pound or two--

Strong and flavorful. The more I smoke this blend from C & D the more I like it. A lot of perique flavor a nice touch of latakia makes it an enjoyable. Love the full nicotine. Not for the smoker who enjoys a mild smoke.

This is a nice, no fuss cool smoking tobacco. It does pack quite a punch though especially if you smoke it on an empty stomach (I'm still dizzy!!).

It is quite enjoyable.

Great taste and a little spicy. This blend can be peppery by about mid-bowl all the way to the finish. It is otherwise quite smooth and smokes cool. Bayou Night is easy to light and stays lit well. The room note is not especially enticing but certainly not objectionable. There are some pleasing, dark flavors that mix well with occasional light notes. A very nice smoke that does not go overboard one way or the other. Although some might find the Perique content a little strong, Bayou Night can be quite nice in the evening after supper. I would not consider it as a blend to use throughout the day.
