Hearth & Home Capitol Stairs

(2.48)
Named after the famed Million-Dollar Staircase in Albany, NY's State Capitol building, it is a truly unique combination of mild, nutty burley, sweet Virginia and perique, and finished off with Deer Tongue (a vanilla-like herb). The result is a non-aromatic blend (no added flavorings) that has an almost French toast-like aroma, and a lightly sweet, smooth smoke that you can enjoy all day.
Notes: According to a recent (07/21/2014) informational request, Deer Tongue has been removed from the blend.

A nice combination of tobaccos that provides more of a Burley/Perique presentation than an ordinary VaPer blend. Some call this Americanized due to the Burley which sure does make its presence known. The Perique is also a player in this one. A little punch in the bowl as it is smoked and I liked that, too.

Hearth & Home - Capitol Stairs.

It looks to be more of a mixture than just a ribbon. The blend includes all different sizes of ribbons, and also a few twigs. Nothing to get in a stew over, there's only one or two that need discarding.

I adore the flavour! At the start of a bowl the Perique is easily the leading taste. It gives quite a sharp spiciness, which is almost overbearing until the Burley joins in. When this arrives the smoke becomes more wholesome, with a bready/nuttiness. I don't get much in the form of grassiness/fruitiness from the Virginia, it seems the quietest of the group; the formidable Perique and flavoursome Burley don't leave much room for others! On the low side of things it can bite my tongue a bit; nothing that a gentle sip doesn't prevent!

I get a medium amount of nicotine, and enjoy the room-note.

Despite the touch of bite I'm highly recommending Capitol Stairs.

Remember the first time you went into a fully stocked tobacco shop? I do vividly. I was 13 or so and the shop was Leaf and Stem Tobacconist in Carbondale, IL. The scent of the tobaccos and the sight of the pipes made me realize this was an adult candy store. Every time I went to Carbondale I visited this shop for I loved the various types of tobacco. Why not just one type? I suppose because everybody has their favorites. I was grateful for this fact for I loved opening ALL the jars and smelling each blend. In a odd way they comforted me which was very strange for no one in my family smoked. The scent of pipe tobacco be it in the pouch or wafting in the room envelopes me and comforts my soul.

Which brings me to Capital Stairs a deertongue enhanced VA, Burley, and dash of Perique blend. This blend looks just like that 45% red virginia, 45% white? burley, 5% perique, 5% big flecks of deertongue. The scent in the pouch is sorta vanillia and yes sorta grassy with a touch of spice. It is a very dry mixture but seemed to moisten with pressing (in my rear pocket 185 to 190 lbs.) over the weekend.

It packs well lights quick and burns thouroughly. The scent is to me wonderful and was even complimented at the laundry by a gentleman who stood down wind of me to enjoy the scent which is much like the pouch. I can not get enough of the scent. I do not know if old blends used this deertongue but for some reason it is so very comforting to me like church on sunday or your favorite meal. The taste of the tobacco is mild to me but tasty and sweet and I keep wanting more. I taste the virginia and the burley but seem to miss the perique over the sweetness of the deertongue which for me is fine. This is a blend I smoke without a need to over analyze which may seem futile to others but I just like smoking bowl after bowl of this and simply enjoying it.

Would I reccomend this blend? That hinges on one simple question. Do you like deertongue? If you tried C&D Trinidad, or Crooner and did not like them well maybe do not bother. It seems like this has more of a deertongue presence then the previous two blends. If you have never tried a deertongue blend this would be a good place to start and if you do not like it end promptly. It is nice that pipesandcigars.com offers this blend and in 1 oz pouches. I love deertongue and because of reasonable price, availability and quick shipment from pipesandcigars.com this is my new everyday tobacco. A special thanks to Russ Ouellette for making me very comfortable indeed.

Capitol stairs has a wondeful pouch aroma of tobacco and spiced vanilla. Yum!! It packs, lights and burns easily and its coarse cut provides a slow, cool and even burn. It's taste is mildly sweet, nutty and smooth.

Unlike vanilla extract cased blends, this has a wonderful natural aroma and taste coming from Deertounge that pleases the smoker and everyone around them.

The Virginia and Burley play very well together and the light touch used with the perique is perfect. While barely detectible in the flavor, the Perique's mild and soft spiceyness compliments the blend in the way a condenmental should, tying it together, giving it a truly supurb balance of flavors.

The balance affords a true complexity that can be enjoyed in "auto pilot" mode, without demanding your full attention. Its behavior is supurb even when puffed aggresively. No bite, sweet nutty and smooth. Always fullfilling, never boring and perfect as an all day smoke. Highly recommended for those who do not care for aromatics, but want a blend with truly complex and balanced tobacco flavors and a great natural aroma.
