Wilke Pipe Tobacco Cherry Cavendish

(3.50)
Ripe cherries, gathered at the height of the season are turned into a cavendish casing and tastefully blended with rich vanilla Cavendish, Red Virginia and a light Burley. A distinctive cherry flavor and aroma.

Here is another blend that I reviewed years ago and somehow the review was deleted.... Carole will add more Cherry extract if you wish and that applies to any Pipework blend, she will add more Maple or Vanilla to any blend for no additional cost. Cherry Cavendish employs the usual black Cavendish but the Virginia used is of the red variety which adds a lot of flavor that is usually absent from aromatics. The prices of the P&W blends have really risen over the years and are at the point that I prefer to buy McClelland tins than to pay $4 an ounce for an Cherry aromatic.. But this aromatic is the absolute top quality of what you would expect a Cherry aromatic to be, natural topping, highest quality leaf and the ability to add additional topping if you want.

I started my pipe journey like so many others, completely backwards. I started as a novice to smoke the hardest genre of pipe tobacco to get to perform well, aromatics.

Aromatic pipe tobaccos take experience and skill to appreciate. You have to know what the perfect moisture level is for smoking, you have to know how to slow down your cadence to avoid tongue bite, you have to know how to pack and pace to keep the bowl smoldering, as this type fo blend is stubborn with the ember.

I started with the drug store goopy aromatics, and vividly named bulk blends. To say the least, it did not go well, as with many new pipers.

There was one blend however, that I really liked, even though it hurt me so badly. That blend was paladin black cherry. It was a bear to love. It would take roughly 6,000 matches to get through a bowl. The gurgle it produced would make my basket pipe sound like a hookah, and it burnt my tongue so bad I would stop halfway through the bowl to look in the mirror to make sure my tongue was still there, and not just a charred stump. So why did I like it? Simple. As a new smoker, it was the only tobacco that actually tasted like it was supposed to. Through the tears, pain, and anguish, I tasted cherry. For a new pipe smoker, that is a huge win.

Now that I know a little more about the art of the briar, it is possible that paladin has not improved, but my ability to decode aromatics has.

Wilke Cherry Cavendish is, for me, hands down, the best cherry pipe tobacco I have ever smoked. The cherry flavor is there, and more so than just a nuance. At the same time, this tobacco performs so regally. It must be dried out a little, and treated with respect, but it pays off in spades.

Thick cut, mix of medium and dark tobaccos. Amazing tin note. Comes a little damp, but dries out quickly compared to most cherry abominations on the market. Performs beautifully. I firmly believe Wilke is one of the highest quality pipe tobaccos you can get your hands on. Easy four stars for me.
