Samuel Gawith Navy Flake

(3.17)
Storm-tossed seas, a howling wind, a ship with full sail beating into the wind and Jolly Jack Tar at the helm with his trusty pipe. Images which are conjured up whilst smoking Samuel Gawith's Navy Flake. A traditional offering of Virginias, pressed with just the right amount of latakia and flavoured with rum. Medium strength.

This blend is sweet and very well balanced. The rum flavour is subtle but present. And when it pops out of a puff while you're taking a walk and it's snowing, you know you're not alone. (Montreal can be cold.) The latakia is as subtle. They work together to bring the taste a step ahead. They simply dynamise the virginia base without being too present. Not smoky. Grassy and sweet. The flakes need to be dried as they come quite moist in the tin.

Disclaimer: If you are looking for an in-depth review of this blend then keep on scrolling. I have reread some of my reviews and my sense of humor is not always the best, please continue to read. I actually only had two bowls of this at the pipe club, jarred and dated 8/12/19. Thanks friend. I smoked the two bowls consecutively and did the fold and stuff method in my brand-new Mark Twain Corn Cob. It took me about a quarter down the bowl both times to get the fire going at a nice steady rate. This has a pleasant lightly topped rum flavor. It was good but something I would need to revisit to give it more of the justice it probably deserves for a proper review. If my friend brings it again and if I remember I will hit him up for another bowl.

My first impression after opening the tin was that this tobacco is way to moist to be smoked directly. So, this tobacco needs some hours to dry. Usually, I am to impatient with the drying time and then it’s hard to keep it lit.

The tin note is sweet rum and a bit smokey. Furthermore, I smell a hint of wet earth.

After lighting the tobacco, I can taste a mix of all ingredients mentioned on the tin while none of them is dominating. It’s just perfectly balanced. The Virginia got a taste of earth, grass and sometimes a bit of wood. The Latakia adds from time to time some smokiness. And finally the rum adds some fruits and sweetness. In some puffs I even get a faint alcoholic taste.

Amazing tin aroma (well I LOVE rum)

smoked "out of tin" wet -- it is the bite machine

Completely dried out -- starts kind of dull but through half of the bowl it gets sweetened, and finish is exceptionally sweetened.

I'd suggest occupying yourself with something else till you reach first half of the bowl.. then take a seat, enjoy the rest.

An interesting mix of VA, Lat and Rum flavour. I got my last order in a rusty (!) tin, which had negative effect on the tin aroma. Big chunks of dark tobaccos, bit on the moist side. Smells like a mix of smoked bacon, liquorice and a hint of Ouzo. Tastes well-balanced, slightly sweet and not typical for a tobacco containing Latakia, which only plays a supporting role adding the leather base. Top quality tobacco, light to medium in Vitamin N. Tastes fantastic in cold, windy or rainy weather. Not a summertime tobacco in my opinion, but definitely recommended for autumn afternoons. Gets four stars if SG manages to introduce a better quality control for their tin material.

As with some of the SG flakes, you will need to dry this for a bit before attempting to even come close to it with fire. I must say this is my first try of a navy flake and I find it is a very nice blend. After getting this lit, it seems to burn nicely and gives me a bit of an oomph in the Vitamin N department, which is hardly a bad thing. The rum flavoring is not overpowering in any sense of the word, but has a good presence. Overall, recommended.

I used to think that SG Navy Flake was too strong for my tastes. But I pulled it out a year later, popped open a sealed jar, and found myself pleasantly surprised by the robust flavors I was enjoying. It reminded me of fresh espresso and cayenne pepper. It burned smooth and cool. I was very impressed.

One of my favorite tobaccos in rotation. The best way to describe it is as a "companion" smoke. It's great for smoking while going about your everyday business or just relaxing and reading a book. The smokiness of the Latakia is present but not overwhelming and same goes for the rum topping. I recommend this to anyone looking for a Navy Flake that isn't overpowering. 3 Stars

I don't smoke many flakes because of the bother of rubbing them out, but I make an exception for SG Navy Flake. It is worth the effort. The Virginia tobacco along with the rum give it a nice sweetness. Not an overpowering sweetness, but just a touch, and the latakia gives it some smokey body. A nice smoke for sitting in the shade and relaxing with.

This is correct tobacco - maybe to correct since in taste it lacks expected fullness of taste. Who knows, maybe it needs more latakia... However, it is good blend especially if you are in company with others in a room.
