Just For Him Treebeard

(2.70)
This is the third in the Middle Earth Pipeweed Series! Red Virginias are blended with a rich vanilla to sweeten aroma. Then burleys are blended in to produce a lightly sweet, nutty, full blend best enjoyed after a long day in the great forests.

This is my first foray into the Middle Earth Series from JFH. This seems to me to be quite a mild blend in taste and aroma. The room note seems quite nice. There seems to be a decent amount of Vitamin N along with a nice amount of smoke produced and little or no gurgle while smoking and it burns down to a nice ash at the end of the bowl. I would recommend this to a new smoker and the old hand as well. You should get a few compliments from those around you in the smoking area and passers-by as well.

I thought I had reached the ultimate with JFH's Golden Cashmere, but I think I like this one just as well. I thought I detected a little Perique, but I guess not. The flavor is just sublime, and it burns really well, leaving a fine gray ash when it's all over. For those who like aromatics, you just can't go wrong with this one! My two ounce bag (received today along with Longbottom Leaf) will not be enough! If you give the folks at JFH a try, you will be pleased with their products and quick shipping (6.60 flat rate!) if you aren't fortunate enough to live close by so you can stop in and meet them!

This is my absolute favorite now. Excellent after dinner or even while eating. The room note is nice and the flavor is divine. Burns well and many compliments on the aroma. Second light burns right to the bottom. A great one to try.

I've tried this blend, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm a fan of most of the JFH blends, especially their middle earth pipeweed series.

However, I'm going to write this review on behalf of a good friend of mine who has declared this to be his absolute favorite tobacco of all.

Treebeard is indeed a grown-up version of the longbottom leaf blend, but it's got an extra hint of complexity in there that I just can't put my finger on. It has a definite deep woodsy, earthy sort of taste and aroma, which comes as no surprise because Just For Him has succeeded in capturing the essence of Tolkien's work on more than several blends so far.

Just like the fictional forest, full of dark and angry trees, centuries old, rich earth, and decades and decades of isolation, this tobacco invokes the essence of a fantastic, otherworldly sort of place. Best enjoyed in a churchwarden, Treebeard is a complex but quiet blend. It's more atmospheric than active when smoked, preferring to suggest rather than define the flavors that it's made of. A masterful little blend, my friend finds it to be the very reason he smokes a pipe, and I don't blame him.

This woody gem is definetly worth a try.

Treebeard is another special blend from Just For Him. They classify it as aromatic English.

This is truly Long-Bottom Leaf with a little more kick.(See my review of LBL). However, not enough kick that I would like but its good for a sweet treat. The sweetness is not overdone and if your looking to try something to satisfy that tobacky sweet tooth you may want to fire some of this up.

In the Middle-Earth Pipeweed line I recommend Short-Cut To Mushroom and in the Just For Him blends I recommend Just For Him...if your looking for something with a hint of sweetness. Just For Him blend starts off creamy and rounds off into a delicious nutty euphoria. You can find these at justforhim.com. Call them they will sell by oz.

I decided to try the Middle Earth Pipeweed while I was reading Lord of the Rings. I didn't read the descriptions, I just requested all four.

Treebeard is the first in the series that I have tried. When I read the description I immediately thought, "Uh-oh... Vanilla". I suspected that someone was trying to cash in on the current LOTR popularity with some cheap heavily cased tobacco, and that this wasn?t going to be a very pleasant experience.

I needn?t have worried. I opened the pouch and found a very natural-smelling blend. Yes, there was vanilla present, but it smelled natural as well. The cut is nice, a mixture of short and medium ribbon. A mixture of predominantly reddish-brown leaf with a nice mix of dark (almost black) and bright highlights make for a visually appealing blend.

Treebeard packs easily, as you would expect from the cut. Moisture content is OK, but a bit of drying wouldn?t hurt.

Lighting was easy. On the initial light you get a taste of the vanilla, which isn?t overdone at all, nor does it taste like candy. The red Virginia comes into play right away, and the vanilla stays in the background. As the bowl progresses, the Burley comes out now and again. The vanilla is always there, as is the Virginia. If not for the Burley, this would be a truly one-dimensional smoke. The sweetness of the Virginia keeps it pleasant.

This is a cased Virginia ? take normal precautions for your tongue. Smoke it slowly and enjoy it.

The room note is actually quite pleasant. It almost doesn?t smell like smoke. Where the vanilla is a secondary player in the bowl, in the room it dominates with the Virginia in support. The aroma is light and fresh.

On the Just For Him website this tobacco is listed by the pound only. If you contact them by email or phone, you can buy it by the ounce.

As a newer pipe smoker, I am mainly exploring the different blends (I favor aromatic blends, although I am dipping my toes into the non-aromatic blends now) to find what I like.

Like many others, I am a huge fan for Tolkien! So naturally I wanted to try some of the available themed blends out there. So far as of 2021 the only easily obtained commercial versions are from The Country Squire and Just for Him. This review is for the "Treebeard" blend from the Just For Him series, there are 5 currently available blends.

Opening the bag, what I smelled was the hay from the Virginia with a bit of the earthy smell from the burley. Unlike the "Longbottom Leaf" blend from this series that said it had vanilla in it, I could actually smell the vanilla (although it was weak).

The flavor I tasted was the combination of the Virginia and burley, with a hint of vanilla (almost non-existent). I liked this blend more than the "Longbottom Leaf" blend from this series, but neither lived up to my expectation and I will not buy this again.

This came semi-moist, so no additional prep was needed. I did not have any tounge-bite with this blend as long as I smoked it slow.

Just got their sample pack. I started with this one. Treebeard has a distinct barky, or woodsy flavour to it. It lit well after the first light/tamp/relite. Stayed burning the whole bowl without relight. I had a slight gurgle at the end that one pipe cleaner took care of. It started woodsy and stayed that way building a slight sweetness(vanilla perhaps?) towards the end. I had very slight tongue bite near the end but I sip/puff often. Definately reminded me of a woodshop or hike through the forest as it's charecter name implies. A good starting place for the middle earth sample pack in my opinion.

I am really much more attracted to stronger blends of tobacco, so to be fair, the Middle Earth series really hasn't done it for me. However, I truly love the uniqueness of all of these tobaccos.

Treebeard is a nice relaxing blend. It lights easily, packs nicely and smokes without effort. What more could one ask, except for strength?

Some sort of bland vanilla aromatic. The best part is that it is not sweet, just a vanilla in the background and not a bad aftertaste. The room note is like burning leaves laced with vanilla, not unpleasant - not going to chase anybody away, but not remarkable either. Was gloppy in the bowl toward the end and experienced a bit more gurgle than I usually do. Overall not bad but not great either.
