Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening

(2.86)
Our proprietary red Virginia cavendish is lightly cased with a delicate maple flavor resulting in our best selling aromatic blend. The smoker will appreciate the taste of Virginias while those around will flock to the warm, inviting fragrance.
Notes: Jeremy Reeves and Chris Tarler mentioned this to be the best selling C&D blend!

It's funny when you sort through the 1 and 2 star reviews how people purchase an aromatic and then complain that it smells and taste like an aromatic. Go figure. I think this is the first aromatic where people complain about it ACTUALLY tasting how it smells. There was one reviewer that said it ghosted his pipe. Really? An aromatic that ghosted another blend? Didn't see that coming at all!!!! *eye roll.* I found this to be a great morning smoke with a big cup of coffee whenever I feel like something sweet. I also smoke it in public or around people I know might not like the smell of a bold english blend given the pleasing aroma.

Tin Note: Heavy on maple, sweetness and vanilla
Cut: Coarse. I thought this was going to be an issue but it seemed to work with this blend.
Dry Time: 2-2.5 Hours
Packing: Given the coarse cut I thought this might get compacted on the bottom of the bowl but I had no issues. I packed slightly loose using a three pinch method as this seemed to work best. If you pack really loose VERY small taps goes a long way in tamping. I didn't even put the weight of the czech tool when tamping.
Nic-Hit: Low

The reason people hate aromatics is usually due to inexperience or they're just set in their ways and if something goes wrong they blame the tobacco. More often then not it's operator error they cant smoke an aromatic. You can't treat an aromatic like an english or straight virginia or any other style of tobacco. The reason being is because, obviously, it's topped. This topping increases the tobaccos' moisture content. Most who dry out their tobacco to the proper moisture content will leave it out for 5-15minutes depending on blend. Because of the topping the tobacco will not dry as fast as the topping will not allow the tobacco to breath. This is where an extended dry time comes into play. Allowing the dry time up to 2.5 hours even 3 hours will mellow, and in some cases, improve the flavors, slow the burn, will not moisten the bowl and cool off the pipe during smoke. An experienced pipe smoker can sip this all day with no tongue bite and a cool pipe.

1st third of bowl - Upon first light that maple and vanilla really come alive. The sweetness isn't overpowering and, in my opinion, blends with the cavendish very well. I usually dislike anything with cavendish but C&D's house cavendish does not steam like the typical American black cavendish. The retro hale really brings out the liquor flavoring and is quite pleasant. Burns warm at first but proper technique will cool things off.

Halfway through the bowl - The top half of the bowl is interesting as the maple, vanilla and sweetness start to fade. The liquor and virginias start to take over with a bread like flavor. The liquor flavor is interesting because it brings a woody almost oak like flavor along with it. Almost like woodchips that I found to be quite nice. Still burning cool with nice slow sips.

Bottom half of bowl- Maple and vanilla have faded but the slight sweetness and whiskey still remain. The bowl was barley warm to the touch and the ash hardly ever needed a tamp.

Bottom of the bowl - A citrus note really started to poke through and remained in the aftertaste. This is where the first and only relight occurred. I got all virginias with a slight woodiness the rest of the bowl. Ashes down almost all the way to the bottom with almost no moisture left in the bowl. There was a pleasant citrus aftertaste.

This is one of my three favorite aromatics and has been there for years. Might need some drying. Easy smoking. Delicious flavor. Not overpowered. The kind of tobacco where you forget you are smoking and you get transported elsewhere. No bite. Go slowly with it.

Big buttery pancakes covered in maple syrup. Caramel and butterscotch running around in there too. Light vanilla and rum notes, mostly in the aftertaste for me. Very sweet, very tasty.

As a novice pipe smoker you get mixed signals about what to try. I think there is easy appeal in aromatics and consequently they are bought for the promise of dessert like flavors.

Autumn evening is no exception. The tin note is potent with strong maple, caramel, cooked sugar, mild liquor, and something reminiscent of the flavors used in a multiflavored pound cake. One might also detect something like a cordial cherry with hints of chocolate and dark fruits or misconstrue the strong maple for butter pecan.

Moisture in the tin was near perfect and the cut is thin more like a shag than a ribbon and seems to be free of stems and other less desirable pieces.

Upon lighting you are greeted with a strong sweetness and the maple is arguably not subtle. Some liquor is detectable but no citrus was to be found at least not to my palate. Some of the light hay and grassy notes of the Virginia is present though it takes a back seat to the overall sweetness. It burns well but would say as a novice you could find yourself chiefing a little too hard and could get bit though I did not or very little. It burns easily so keep your tamper handy but didn’t notice any major loss of flavor at mid-bowl. Maybe due to cadence or poor packing most blends regardless of type get a little ashy at the bottom and lose flavor. This was no exception.

If you don’t like sweet it isn’t for you. I appreciate that tobacco taste is present and it isn’t just hot air but it isn’t some super complex blend in my opinion. It is what is says it is, a maple aromatic but it is evident why it is popular. I can see myself enjoying it but the strength of the maple may lend itself to growing tiresome.

To name the toppings of this blend is almost unnecessary, the highlight is the perhaps overlooked accomplishment of the cavendish process on the red Virginia leaf. To name the toppings would sail Autumn Evening into the wrong docks, it is lightly aromatic to highlight some of the red Virginia’s qualities. If you come to revel in maple and butterscotch, vanilla and rum, you might miss the important triumphs! I received this blend perhaps overly dry, yet it was still hard to keep lit, so a point for mechanical difficulties.

This tobacco smells pronormal! This coming from a highly recommended/Trusted company... This is the blend that turned me off of aromatics forever! This bit hard from first puff to the last. The flavor was absolutely nonexistent. I returned the tin 3 times thinking it was a bad tin... No, personally this is just a bad tobacco.

Fantastically cool, undeniably flavorful and a pleasure to enjoy any time of the year. Burns slow and steady, I can keep this lit for impressively long time periods.

Mild nicotine strength, strong pleasurable room note. Tin note is delicious, almost good enough to eat.
