Samuel Gawith Balkan Flake

(3.21)
A beautifully formed dark flake of pressed Virginias and a generous helping of latakia. Relax and enjoy this medium strength tobacco with its "smokey" flavour and cool, smooth characteristics.

Revised 04-14-2005 Another Classic from SG!

Appearance and Tin aroma: two beautiful stacks of 1 inch by 3 inch sliced flakes that are mostly dark brown and they smell delicious!

Packing and Lighting: I found that rubbing out the flakes works best with 1 slice filling a group 4 bowl. Lighting can be a chore when the tin is first opened as it is pretty moist and oily. I found letting the slice dry out for a few hours before rubbing out and packing worked for me.

Initial Flavor: Cool, delicious Latakia with the VA there firmly.

Mid Bowl: Nice interplay with both leaves, thoughts of Tents, Turbans, and Camels in my mind.

Bottom of Bowl: Nice rich increase in strength, leave a fine grey ash when it is all over with thoughts of filling another bowl of this blend!

Overall: This is a delicious blend, but lacks complexity due to the lack of other orientals. It is not as complex as "Charing Cross" or "Balkan Saseini", but as its loosely style name implies, it is a wonderfully cool smoking delicious "Balkan" that occasionally makes my rotation.

This is another SG tobacco which has earned a dedicated pipe in my rack. It comes in very thin, moist, dark brown, six inch strips of flake. I buy it in bulk and transfer about 100g to a 1/2 litre bail topped jar which I use as a humidor. I rub out a fistful and let it sit out for at least twenty-four hours before smoking. The left-overs go back in the jar where the moisture is restored, an effective way of bringing the moisture of the jar's contents down gradually. When treated this way, the tobacco burns easily and delivers plenty of smoke and flavor with no bite. This is an extraordinarily smooth combination of Virginia and latakia. This is not a complex smoke of changing flavors and nuances. Instead, the tobacco achieves a certain clarity of perfection and maintains that taste from start to finish. With the relatively recent offerings of Balkan Flake, Navy Flake, and Tavern Tobacco's Laurel Flake and Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge, the Samuel Gawith folks have created some truly great tobaccos. Most highly recommended. Paddy.
