W.O. Larsen Simply Unique

(2.97)
A mixture with a base of Old Belt Virginia, Tennessee burley and Orientals. These have been slowly fermented into a perfect black cavendish. A mild aroma of vanilla, chocolate and walnuts. (A very velvety black cavendish from Old Belt Virginia and Tennessee burley makes the base of this loose cut mixture. Virginia tobaccos from Africa and U.S.A. and broad-cut bright Virginia of Brazilian origin combined with fine aromas of walnut and vanilla offer a tasting experience of a deeper, finely sweet note.)

Simply Unique is a mild Danish classic that manages to hit my personal sweet spot when it comes to balancing out tobacco taste and subtle flavoring. Leaving the tin open for a while improves the pleasure imho and does not do any harm, just allows the tobaccos to take a little more room. For some reason I associate the tobacco and the tin/pouch design with a gentlemen's blend, that just asks to be smoked in public combine with an elegant, sleek or sophisticated looking Danish freehand pipe.

Looking for the answer to what the definition of a Danish classic could look/taste like, ... well, this is it! Enjoy.

I bought on-line 5 pcks 50 grammes WO Larsen Unique......Is this the same as WO Larsen Simply UNIQUE??? Packaging is 50 gram in a brown resealable pouch........Bought in Asia, maybe different name and pack for a different market? Paid a very low price of USD 5 for 1 pouch. Tobacco smokes fine, slow,no bite.....right moisture content.....happy with it and worth trying to get more for this price Maybe someone knows the answers to the questions above

Since I prefer naturals it's kind of hard for me to review aromatics unbiased. Got this as a gift from a friend that doesn't smoke and had no clue what I like. It's now called 'unique' and the description says it's a blend of old belt VA and Burley with oriental tobaccos which at first sounded good for me.

Smell in pouch is of hard Danish aroma. Very much dark steamed raw cut leaf mixed with a bit of golden VA. Scents of black tea, vanilla and nuts but no tobacco. Comes rather moist so that drying for me is necessary.

Takes a few lights until burning properly but then it smokes rather cool and even. In the first half if the bowl I thought I could not finish it due to vanilla overpowering but as the smoke continues the flavoring gets a bit milder and some real tobacco tastes come through. Can taste the Burley with a nutty character now but still hard to detect all the components. Still leaves a lot of condensate in the pipe.

I'd say it's a strong aromatic not my cup of tea at all but have to admit that there are also some natural tastes hidden inside the powerful sauce. Room note is immediately detected as vanilla by my wife.

Some time ago I unexpectedly discovered another W.O. Larsen, from the same family, the True Delight, that became one of my favourites. So now I wanted to try them all. This is a decent aromatic, where you feel the sweet aromas without that they overhelms the real tobacco taste. I guess most of the aromatic game comes from the really sweet Burley, the one I can perceive more. Orientals and Virginia I feel them more as comprimary in the background. Cavendish I think is there giving just some more character to the ensamble, and it appears more and more evident after the alf bowl. Good lighting and regular combustion. I'm not so much for persistent aromatics, so luckily for me, the more intense flavor flies away after first 15 minute, giving a continuous evolution of the smoke, in the direction of the rial tobacco taste that in the first minutes is in some way hidden. The thing I could not explain is the way it is so cool smoke...no high themperature, no bite, no acid irritation to mouth and tongue, really atypical for a cheap aromatic! Finally, a good, honest, cheap aromatic, with some good sweet flavor and still a good tobacco taste. I am not going to make a regular stock of it, because I prefer natural aromatics more, but I think I'll buy it now and then.

A very nice subtle aromatic. While not particularly complex, it offers more depth than many similarly priced over the counter blends. The nose is outstanding and probably justifies the "simply unique" moniker. The initial aroma is of almonds and chocolate, which develop into light walnut-like undertone. Smokes without any surprises and stays reasonably even through the bowl. Highly recommended as an all-day smoke to be kept in rotation if you like continental aromatics.

Nice blend for an aromatic smoker but not for me. I use this for mellowing Cornell&Diehl Bayou Night. Quality tobacco none the less, as all Larsen blends.

Upon smelling this tobacco for the first time, I was extremely curious if it would live up to that smell.

After smoking it for the first time, I was slightly dissapointed. The taste wasn't bad, but I expected something better. However, after smoking it from my brand new (self made) pipe, I got convinced: this is a great aromatic.

The taste is rather full, but not overwhelming, the room note is soft and has a bit of nut and chocolate in it. Comparing it to other aromatics such as FireDance Flake or Mac Baren's vanilla cream, this smoke is almost chewable.

This tobacco has no tendency to smoke hot or bite your tongue, but it does smoke a bit wet every now and then (might be caused by the fact I was smoking it mainly outdoors in the wind).

Conclusion: a top notch aromatic, for a great price!

This and Sweet Aromatic are my two favorite W.O.Larsen blends (of the ones I have tried so far). Both have very little bite for being aromatics and are simply delightful.

Opening a Simply Unique pouch treats you to a heady aroma. Though the description says vanilla, chocolate, and walnut flavoring, I find the first thing that comes to mind from the pouch aroma is rum raisin. That said, upon lighting I can definitely spot the vanilla and walnut in the taste of the smoke. The chocolate mentioned is a bit more elusive for me but I think I can spot it. At any rate it is very high quality tobacco, nice moisture content but no problem to light and keep lit right from the very start, burns relatively coolly for an aromatic and the flavor is consistent through the whole bowl (I find Sweet Aromatic on the other hand has an truly outstanding taste on first light that becomes more subdued relatively quickly in comparison). Although I don't experience much problem with a bite from this tobacco, if you find yourself getting bit some perhaps smoking more slowly or maybe even taking a short break mid-bowl will help. At any rate, I really like this tobacco and it is one that will remain in my steady rotation.

Bottom line: A delightful smoke, great pouch aroma reminiscent of rum raisin, sweet vanilla and walnut taste from the smoke easily identifiable and consistent. Lights and burns well. Highly recommended for any aromatic lover or for a change of pace for English blend fans.

SIMPLY UNIQUE...7th-03-2008.

I fully agree that Simply Unique,is just that! For anyone new to pipe smoking I strongly suggest you try this. It won't burn your tongue to shred's,as long as you puff slowly and gently! (Steady as she goe's,and you'll have very smooth sailing to the bottom of the bowl) "HIGHLY RECOMENDED" TO NEW SMOKER'S,OR,THOSE WHO LIKE A GENTLE SMOOTH SMOKE.That doe's contain a pleasant topping of some sort?

I like aromatic tobaccos but am not keen on ones that are overly sweet and sickly. This one smells slightly boozy in the pouch though I'm not quite sure what of exactly. This is not as sweet as Alsbo Black but has that similar continental aromatic casing.

I found it had a tendency to burn quite hot and there is a vague threat of bite lurking there if puffed really hard - for these reasons it will not be replacing Glen Piper as my current all day smoke. I will however be happily finishing the pouch and may even order another...

Good room note so should please non smokers for those of you allowed to puff indoors! Nice classy packaging from Larsen.

Recommended for those with a sweet tooth.
