Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Happy (Brown) Bogie Unsliced

(3.25)
This is a dark fired and dark air cured twist. Also known as Happy Bogie. An old fashioned rope tobacco that provides a stout smoke with high nicotine content. All our twist tobacco varieties are manufactured by the same spinning process using dark fired wrapper leaves. The filler is again, predominantly dark fired leaf with the addition of a small percentage of dark air cured Indian leaf. They are therefore strong tobaccos.
Notes: This Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. dark fired and dark air cured twist is also known as Happy Bogie. This brown twist is a bit stronger than the black twist and is made to slice into coins for smoking, or small plugs for chewing - as done by many sailors.

Happy Bogie is a noble example of old-fashioned English rope tobaccos. A nicely satisfying smoke. Flavourwise it's noticeably drier and thinner than other ropes from Gawith & Hoggarth. The closest parallel in the world of wines would be a strong dry sherry.

I'm totally fine with its level of Nicotine strength and don't think this rope is excessively strong. It does need some respect however, as too fast a pace may lead to Nicotine easily overwhelming all other flavours which aren't too intensive.

Generally, I prefer sweeter and fuller ropes from Samuel Gawith. However, while both Gawithes offer similar (still not identical) Black and Brown ropes in their product lines, this one remarkably has got no counterpart on the other side.

All in all, I may earnestly recommend Happy Bogie to those seeking a good potent and "clean" smoke.

Slimmer ring gauge than XX Black Rope. Brown feces-like appearance... Great as a blender to add stoutness & Vitamin N to weaker tobacco.

This is the same as Brown Twist from Gawith Hoggarth.

This is a straight Virginia

There is a deep, creamy, rich taste s very good. profile. There is a pepperiness on the tongue. It lacks some of the natural sweetness I like in straight Virginias but it is good. Medium in body and taste. It is a transport vehicle for nicotine.

Nothing nuanced and not a ‘modern blend’ by any stretch. Simple, strong and unsophisticated in the best way.
