John Middleton, Inc Prince Albert Soft Vanilla Cavendish

(2.48)
A soft and sweet vanilla rounded out with a complex fruity background. Smooth, mild, and cool. It tastes as great as it smells.

This would be the tobacco I would recommend to a new smoker. It's mild, it's very soft as the name claims, it has a good flavor for such a mild blend, and it smells great in the room note. However, it is way to soft and mild for me and thus was not very satisfying. It is a multicolored mix of ribbon cut in the pouch with a terrific pouch aroma smelling fruity and vanilla like. It loaded very easy in the pipe, I found it to be moist but nut in the sticky, gummy way many aros are. It lit up with to lights and smoked down to a soft grey ash with very little dottle and not with any gunk in the bottom of my pipe. It has a very nice sweet, vanilla taste, but not very much of it. It did retain it's taste all the way down and did not lose it like a lot of vanilla blends. It was bite free, but I kept trying to smoke it faster and harder to get the delicous taste from it. If an inexperienced smoker did this, I'm sure it would scald their tongue. When puffed too fast, instead of more of the sweet taste, it tended to get bitter. This blend would not be one I would put in my cellar, it lives up to it's name and there sure are a lot worse blends.

John Middleton - Prince Albert Soft Vanilla.

The aroma from the pouch is enticing: sweet, vanilla. Mine wasn't the 9 ounce bag pictured, but a 1 and 1/2 ounce bag, and the moisture to the fairly coarse ribbons gained applause from me. Black Cavendish makes up the least, it's primarily medium brown.

At first light, my inaugurate thought was 'wow, MASSIVE plumes!'. Throughout a bowl PASV makes big clouds of smoke; cool and bite free. The flavour? Well the tobacco side is a simple Burley/Cavendish, I don't get much, if any, sticky black Cavendish. Of the toppings the vanilla leads, but as a smoke progresses the alcoholic side makes itself known, becoming a contradistinction to the name Soft. It burns at a medium speed.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: nice, but there's SO MUCH smoke!

Prince Albert Soft Vanilla? A little mundane, ergo, two stars:

Somewhat recommended.

I am a fairly new pipe smoker and have so far tried about 10 different tobaccos. I love the smell of this tobacco in the pouch. Like some of the other reviewers I found almost no taste when smoking it. It's not unpleasant, just not much there at all. I might just keep a pouch of this around to smell on occasion!

I found this at Costco a few years ago ($25 for a 9oz. bag) and decided to give it a try. The pouch aroma is great -- in fact the entire tobacco room at the Costco where I bought it reeks of vanilla thanks to a couple dozen bags of this stuff. It's not bad. It's not great either.

As others have noted, the pouch aroma is great. It's not a bad Cavendish blend. But there's not a whole lot of flavour to it -- too mild for me. I've also found that it needs to dry a bit before smoking. Right out of a fresh pouch it smokes very wet and very hot with lots of bite. It also gets very bitter when it burns hot, but that said, it's also got a consistent but mild bitterness to it all the time. My wife has a real nose for room note and complains that there's something "wrong" with this tobacco. Others seem to like it.

Overall, it's not a bad deal for the money if you want something cheap, but you can do a lot better.

I've smoked so far 2 pouches of this stuff, and everytime i do it is because people ask me to do so, the smoke smells great, but when you have it in your mouth you just can't get the taste of it, it also tastes bitter if you smoke it too fast, nice for a change of pace but there's better vanilla aromatics out there.

After running out of pipe tobacco mid-holiday and following on from my disaster purchase of Clan, the next port of call on my caribbean cruise offered up a variety of Prince Albert pipe tobacco's and I selected this one. I really enjoyed it - it didn't take much to light or stay alight but created smoke like a wet bonfire. this was a bit embarrassing, especially for a newbie and slightly self conscious pipe smoker, but it smelt great, tasted good, was a little bitey but not too bad and the smell gained approval from "the boss". I found it created a lot of goop and gunk at the bottom of the bowl that required some significant cleaning. A bit unrefined and I wouldn't probably go to too much effort to seek out another packet but an excellent stand in that I would be happy to smoke again.

I have recently began trying old, "drugstore" blends, which I have not tried in twenty years. This was not one of my big ones back then and I can see why. This said, I will say that there is no much "wrong" with Prince Albert Soft Vanilla cavendish. It has a very good room note and smokes well. Once lit, it smoked all the way through with satisfying amounts of billowing smoke. It was easy to lite right out of the pouch. My inital problem with it was the flavor or, rather, the lack therof. For an "aromatic," there simply was not much flavor as I first lit up. About halfway through the bowl it began to develop a decent cavendish taste but never did taste very "vanilla." All in all I must say that I agree with those who say this is a good "beginner tobacco." I doubt that I shall be purchasing anymore unless I am on the road and this is all I can find. I would not be sorry to have it but I would prefer to put my money into better blends. I will add that my girlfriend simply loves the room note on this tobacco.

I really really wanted to love this stuff, but I just can't get there. I guess I expected BCA with a Burley flavor, and that is not what I got at all. Tastes like a cheap cigar, which I can deal with, if not for the room note...some people may love it, but I thought it smelled awful. Sure there's that "aromatic" thing going on, but it sort of smells like a cheap imitation of your grandfather's vanilla cavendish. I did not like much about this smoke, but it's definitely not the worst I've ever had and I can understand why some people might enjoy it. For me, however, it's a no-go.

When viewing my reviews, one must remember that I was a cigarette smoker for 50+ years and am just returning to my pipes. I find this a very mild non-biting smoke. It's good enough for a change but not enough kick for constant use. I, so far, like Burleys and Burley Brights. It seems to smoke coolest and best in a cob pipe.
