Wilke Pipe Tobacco Royal Scot

(2.71)
The famous Royal Scot, a most aromatic blend, remains unique and unlike any other aromatic ever made. The flavoring for this classic mixture has been a closely held secret for over 100 years. This melange of plugged Virginia, North Carolina and burley can be smoked as is, or used to enhance your own favorite blend.

Something about the description of this being an American Classic cased with a secret ingredient lured me into trying a couple of ounces. No real loss, but this one’s not for me. It’s a decent aromatic to start with, not overly sweet, but by mid-bowl most of the creamy topping has burned off. At that point it’s pretty one-dimensional. I never did a direct comparison but Carter Hall kept coming to mind. If that sounds like your cup of tea then give it a shot. I almost gave this three stars because there’s nothing really wrong with it except the flavor burning off. After a year in jar trying to get through my two ounces it got progressively more and more tasteless, so if you do decide to try it don’t sit on too long.

A very soft and fluffy chestnut brown ribbon cut, a bit too moist out of the bag. I dried this to varying degrees and found that just a hair drier than it came provided its essence. Any drier and you lose the aromatic agent... which I did to improve it... but then why buy an aromatic? Interesting bag note, sort of a fruit and nut combo. Not a heavy aroma.

This strikes me as a pre-1970's aromatic, just before the advent of black Cavendish-based aromatics that became mega popular. No goop in this one at all and not heavily scented. Heavy American-style aromatics usually fall into two camps for me - the first is the chemical tasting ones whose flavor lasts almost to the bottom, and the second is the ones that are a bit more natural tasting for half a bowl and then turn ashy. This one falls into the latter camp. First half-bowl was a sort of codger burley with some added flavoring, which was not bad at all. From there, it turned ashy tasting and lost all its original flavor. Consistently. So I tried using it as a blender where it imparted a little of its flavor but otherwise didn't impact the blend. Of course, I didn't have nearly enough to test it fully, so at least a wagon-load of salt goes well here. Bottom line is I won't be repeating this one but if you like the concept of a light aro where the flavoring doesn't choke the life out of the leaf, try this one. It takes me back to when the codgers would meet at my dad's house to watch football on a chilly Sunday. Oh, and this goes better in briar than in meerschaum and may suit cob smokers even better!

Don't know what its in this tobacco, but it is great. Just too bad that Pipeworks and Wilke are now only making it available in some of their blends.

I'm fairly new to pipes, but have tried a variety of tobaccos, including four from Wilke. I'd say Royal Scot is definitely one of my favorites. Not truly an aromatic, but there is still that hint of something interesting. Leaves a good clean aftertaste of pure tobacco unlike some other aros I've tried. Burns well and clean down to dry ash. With some other tobaccos, it helps to leave them out to dry a bit before smoking, but Wilke's seem to be always ready to load up and light. Just finished up my first 2 oz of this and placed another sampler order with Carole, but HAD to make one of them Royal Scot again.
