Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Sweet Rum Twist

(3.13)
This is a twist made from the same ingredients as the Black and Brown Irish X. It has additional rum flavoring added during manufacture. Again, this is a very strong tobacco as it does not undergo the pressure cooking process. Sweet Rum Twist - The main feature of this tobacco is the addition of maple sugars blended with rum to the 'filter' leaf. This is then spun into a rope form before being made into a roll which is cold-pressed overnight

I had long wanted to try G&H's famous ropes and was afforded a generous sample by a fellow smoker. I really enjoyed slicing coins off of the rope and rubbing out the coins completely. I attempted to smoke this without completely drying it out in the microwave without any enjoyment. When moist, it is very rough on the palate and refuses to burn. When completely dried out it is much more pleasant.

The smoke is cool and is medium bodied. The flavor alternates between that of a good cigar, spicy Virginia flavor, and the sweet rum casing. It is pleasant on the tongue and rather enjoyable with a cup of coffee. The nicotine strength doesn't bother me, but I find it to be best enjoyed in a small bowl. You will definitely get a nicotine fix from this tobacco.

The drawback to this blend is its burning qualities. The problem is that it doesn't burn at all. I can't get it to stay lit for longer than five minutes no matter what I try. As with every blend that I've had this trouble, I find it to be a great hindrance. Particularly since the flavor upon a relight is that of a cigar that has been smoked too close to its cap.

I plan on trying to use this rubbed out to add some strength to the milder VA's which I have become accustomed to. While I enjoy its flavor, I do not care to relight my pipe every five minutes. If you enjoy the stronger Gawith type blends, this is well worth a try. However, I find that this is one of those tobaccos that was fine to give a ride and see how it went, but I don't see myself purchasing in the future.

I bought four ounces of GH&C Sweet Rum Twist about three and a half years ago, put it in a small mason jar, cellared and forgot about it. This week, I brought it cut and the rope into thin disk, most of which immediately fell apart. The unlit tobacco had a mildly sweet, dark-fired tobacco aroma.

Day 1: I loaded a large briar with a healthy amount and lit it, or rather, tried to light it. It was so moist that it took numerous charring lights before I could get it to burn. So, the first point is that this tobacco needs considerable drying time. The flavor once lit was fairly sweet and quite pleasant, with no bitterness, harshness or bite, but it was also not very strong tasting. I did not detect any rum, just sweetness. The sweetness lingered nearly to the end of the smoke, and the flavor remained fairly constant. So, the second point is that SRT is a one-dimension tobacco blend. The nicotine level was less than I expected, given the other reviews. Given its high moisture level, it needed a lot of relights.

Due to the blend's moisture level, I left the jar open for a day and then smoked it again in a similar sized briar.

Day 2: After drying, SRT was a totally different blend; in some ways better and in some ways worse. Unsurprisingly, it was much easier to light and keep lit. Flavor-wise, it lost all of its sweetness but had a more pronounced dark-fired tobacco flavor. It also had a considerably higher level of nicotine, I presume because it burned faster. I liked the flavor of the blend better when it was moister, so point three is don't dry it too much as the moisture level affects the flavor considerably.

I would rate SRT two and a half stars for taste but, given how much work is involved in getting it to burn, I'm giving it a final rating of two stars. It is a pleasant enough smoke, but there are many others that are better.

Not sure who set up this blend, but it's made of dark-fired Virginia like the rest of the GH twists. It's a brown twist, uncooked and powerful. The rum adds a little (imo necessary) sweetness to the mix.

As with all the GH twists, I slice into coins, break them up lightly, and gravity fill.

Of the twists, this is my favorite, I think the rum adds a needed bit of complexity to otherwise very pure, clean tobacco flavor. But don't buy this expecting Burley or Kentucky tobacco, it has neither.
