J. F. Germain & Son Germain's Brown Flake

(3.24)
Brown Flake is a molasses colored Virginia leaf. pressed into broad flakes that are resinous and delectable. The naturally bright lemon Virginia is first air cured to draw out the simpler, nuttier flavor, then pressed to ferment in its own vital juices.

After I opened the lid, IMO, the aroma was very light, although I detected a little bit of a nutty aroma. The tobacco was moist but rubbed out easily. Packing my White Tail Deer by Nording was easy and seemed to pack quite well.

I used one match to light the packed bowl and detected a hint of a nutty aroma with a full rich taste. To thoroughly enjoy this Brown Flake one needs to take their time while smoking the tobacco.

I did enjoy the tobacco as it was not harsh, with no tongue bite as it burned evenly with very little use of a tamper. As the tobacco burned it?s way to the half way point of the bowl I tasted a little sweetness, I could not tell if it was from the Virginia or the Sugar Crystals.

Brown Flake comes in a very convenientectangular tin that will fit just about any pocket. The flake is dry and leathery but somewhat fragile when separated from the block. It rubs out very easily, leaving no residue on my hand. To a smoker of aromatics I should think the tin aroma would be unremarkable but to a Virginia fan like me it carries reminders of a slightly musty hay mow. I would say the early harvest which is now fermenting.

This is not my favourite Virginia but it is interesting enough to keep in the rotation. The manufacturer only claims Viginia in this flake but I fancy I can taste Turkish and/or oriental leaf here too. Be that as it may, the flavour is very dark and enigmatic right from the beginning of the bowl. Both the flavour and the strength tend to increase as the bowl burns down. It is strong enough that one bowl is about all I want in day.

I have smoked Brown Flake in a medium sized meerschaum Dublin and a Danish free hand briar. Naturally the dynamic flavour range of the briar is greater but so is the amplitude. I prefer the meerschaum.

JF Germain Brown Flake - The tin note is that unmistakably fermented smell of Germain tobacco . An all Virginia blend that is air cured and fermented in its own natural juices . It still has just enough sweetness to go along with the savory nutty flavor of an air cured tobacco . I get hay and citrus and honey and tea notes also . A little floral and earthy herbal notes . A very minor spice hit . Some semois -like cigar notes are noticeable. Not really in my wheelhouse but enjoyable nonetheless. For my personal tastes it is a 3

Finally a smoke to make me pull my fingers (thumbs) out and say something.

Having only & exclusively smoked J.F. germains since showing an interest in pipe smoke. I’ve got to say, next to plumb cake. This is the best. Being English, and living in England. The English, or Lakeland blends, are a bit same-y same-y.

This however smokes like tobacco, is like tobacco & is for anyone who doesn’t like pre-tense.

Cut like Picasso was on the slicer, you’d mistake it for bresaola. Might chew a piece to see.

Needs no babysitting, gentle rub and stuff. Not dry…hey what do you think?
