Cornell & Diehl Old Joe Krantz

(3.22)
Ribbon and coarse cut burleys, perique and red Virginia. Shades of brown with the characteristic mustiness of perique.
Notes: Notes from Bob: The blend was named in honor of my grandfather, who was also my pipesmoking mentor and role model. He primarily smoked burleys, like Union Jack and Edgeworth Sliced. I cannot think of a time when I didn't see him w/o one of his beat-up pipes and the aroma of pipe smoke around him. In any case, I was reading the reviews of Haunted Bookshop and Norm Musicant indicated that he liked more red Virginia in his blends. Norm is someone whose opinion I respect. I was still looking for a simple hearty burley blend that could hold my interest all day. So, a new blend.

I've been hanging out with OJK for a few weeks now and though he's not an everyday companion, I see him at least a few times a week. OJK is a burly Burley with loads of flavor from the condimental leaf--Virginia and Perique. The whole of it comes together with a trail-mixy quality--dried fruit, nuts, and sweetness. Maybe it's best smoked on the hiking trail, but I haven't tried that yet.

I love a good cigar and if there is one more thing attractive and unique about this blend, it's the woody, cigar-like quality of the flavor's finish.

The only drawback with this blend is its extraordinary springiness at first light. It lifts itself out of the pipe like a chin-up artist and seems to need extra attention with the tamper. But such idiosyncrasies are easily forgiven in the face of such flavor. Highly recommended for part-time pipesters with penchants for stogies, trail mix and acrobats.

And it's particularly nice with an Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout.

I really have nothing to add to the other descriptions. I really like this tobacco.

BUT - it is very strong in nicotine, and sneaks up on you. In that way it reminds me of Two Friends Redwood - a blend that doesn't seem like it would be that strong, but which Greg Pease describes with "that stuff knocks me over."

Not much in common taste wise, but like Redwood this tobacco also smokes easy, with no bite. So its tempting to smoke quickly...Which will knock YOU over.

Keep this in a small bowl.

I have just tried this blend for the first time today. This is my fourth pipe full and am looking forward to many more. This has plenty of full tobacco flavor and an exellent amount of perique and is very easy on the tounge. My wife is not jumping up and down over the room note, however I can tell I will be able to smoke this one in the easy chair with little complaint. I will add this to my must have on hand list. what more can I say, thank you Bob and Craig!

This is one of my top tobaccos. Probably second only to Haunted Bookshop. If you like Burley, you must give this blend a try. This blend is also heavy on the Perique, so it packs a punch. The first thing that hits me, is the Burley. The Perique really starts to shine around mid bowl. There is a pronounced sweetness that you might not expect. I suspect that the sweetness comes from the Red Virginia in the blend. The room note probably won't win any awards with bystanders, but to me it smells great! Highly Recommend!!

I went up against Old Joe Krantz. I filled the bowl, lit it, and was transported to a world in which fairies exist and the gods cast thunder upon those who do not heed their words.

My 1st everyday smoke. Absolutely love this blend. From the raisin tin note to the kick it gives. When I have time to pipe I average 4-5 bowls a day...maybe more.

I buy it by the pound now that Nightcap won't be a daily for me anymore 🙁

If you love burley this may be for you.

I really enjoyed this blend. It just had an outstanding flavor with no bite whatsoever. I would consider this a burley blend, which is good. I might got a touch of the Perique, but it's small. The strength was good, almost perfect.

What a wonderful burley blend! It is well balanced with perique and other things. The earthiness, combined with the peppy nature. It has a lot of Vitamin N , with some Virginia that is quality.

Another AAA blend by the best tobacco people in the universe. OJK is a totally satisfying, enjoyable smoke for the experienced piper. A perfect all day, all night blend. I go for a week smoking OJK only and then switch to Gentleman caller for the next week. 4 stars all the way, 5 would be more appropriate but not available.

OJK has become a favorite of mine. It is a full-flavored natural tobacco. The individual ingredients interplay throughout the bowl. Don't get me wrong this is clearly a Burley blend but the Va adds sweetness and the Perique the tang, they make themselves present at various intervals with different degrees of strength. You will at times catch a taste and side stream of cigar. If you like fairly strong no nonsense tobaccos this is a must try. When you are having trouble selecting a smoke, you grab OJK and you will always be glad you did. I agree with others that say this is an old time style tobacco. I find this a perfect companion to Riverboat Gambler. It gets a little stronger and bitter (in a good way)towards the bottom of the bowl and it will burn clean to the bottom. This is probably not for everyone but for those that like flavor and strength and give this a chance it may end up being their deserted Island, every day and all day smoke. Hats off to C&D and Bob Runowski for a true delight.
