Cornell & Diehl Old Joe Krantz
(3.22)
Ribbon and coarse cut burleys, perique and red Virginia. Shades of brown with the characteristic mustiness of perique.
Notes: Notes from Bob: The blend was named in honor of my grandfather, who was also my pipesmoking mentor and role model. He primarily smoked burleys, like Union Jack and Edgeworth Sliced. I cannot think of a time when I didn't see him w/o one of his beat-up pipes and the aroma of pipe smoke around him. In any case, I was reading the reviews of Haunted Bookshop and Norm Musicant indicated that he liked more red Virginia in his blends. Norm is someone whose opinion I respect. I was still looking for a simple hearty burley blend that could hold my interest all day. So, a new blend.

If you love Burley, and like a Va/Per, give this a try. But you've gotta love Burley. Like, a lot.
I found the Burley overwhelming in this blend. It's potent, acrid, a little bitter, and definitely powerful. I'd have guessed there was cigar leaf in here if I hadn't read otherwise -- its got that kinda peppery creaminess I expect from cigar.
I just don't like Burley. I'd personally give this one star, but I'll give it two because I understand I'm biased here. It's somewhat recommended to your average smoker, and probably a dream come true for a Burley fanatic.
The one thing I'll say positive -- the virginias underneath are actually very high quality. I get glimpses of sweetness, especially early in a bowl, which tell me that there's a strong virginia base somewhere. And the perique has a nice dark fruit spice. But by mid-bowl the burleys have dominated both, to the extent that I have trouble differentiating this after the first third from Burley Flake #1.
Not reordering this one. But I'm glad to read its some other reviewers' cup-o-tea.

I was looking for a daily smoke to alternate with my Haunted Bookshop so I bought a 2 oz tin of OJK. The burley is very musty and robust. The perique provides a great deal of spice, however I don't get a whole lot of fruity notes. For me the Virginia was nearly MIA. The nicotine is where this blend shines, in my opinion. In fact, it is a little too much for me, as I notice it affecting my blood pressure a bit. Not sure I will be purchasing this again, although it is a convenient way to get a satisfying dose of nicotine. I don't feel it is comparing apples to oranges to say I prefer Haunted Bookshop over this. More like comparing Granny Smith apples to Fuji apples. But, I digress. I can recommend this to nicotine junkies like myself, but I would not recommend this to a new pipe smoker as I feel this does not display the full potential of the flavors of the types of tobaccos it contains. Two and a half stars.

This is an occasional smoke but part of my rotation nonetheless. I am overwhelmed by the sensations the smoke provides but still find it tasteless at times. Billowing smoke, spicy and just plain tobacco flavor. I like it but this is definitely not for everyone. I usually have either OJK or five brothers if I am in the mood for that kind of stuff.
