Slightly sweet and smokey with a hint of Burley bitter here & there as the bowl progresses..

The tin claims "A smooth blend of nutty cubed Burley enhanced with Cyprian Latakia and lightly sweetened black Cavendish" and that description is exactly what you get. I taste each of the blends components and in my opinion they get along well with out any individual one dominating the smoke, as occasionally can be the case when these type of blends are put together.

Appearance: Mostly cube cut with a fair portion of black chunks scattered throughout. The "grape nuts" comparision mentioned by the esteemed emmbee below is spot on. Aroma is good to me, can't quite place that tin note but I like it. Sweet - tobaccoy is the only way I can think to describe it. This one came a bit dry for me. However, I do prefer my tobacco more on the moist side then most..

Packing: Simple 3 step works great here. What I like to do with Canal Boat is pinch a bunch out, lay it on paper, fold the paper in half and pour it in, pack, pour, pack etc..Given the cut here any method you prefer should work well including the 'ol codger scoop..it's not picky.

Lighting/smoking: This takes to flame quite easy. It seems to have quite a bit of spring to it when it's first lit. Takes a few tamp/lights to get it settled in or alternatively lightly hold your tamp on the top after char light and take slow puffs. Form the tobacco as you go and you won't even need another match. This starts off kinda bitey/bitter to me and at first blush I didn't think I was going to like it. Thankfully that goes away quickly and gives way to a smoke just as described up above. Slightly sweet and smokey. That bitter pops in here but this time not in a negative way. It serves as a nice accompaniment to the sweet smoke. The topping I smell in the tin must be providing the sweet and it last throughout the entire smoke. Pleasant but not overwhelming. The Latakia smokiness is just enough here it too adds to the smoke without taking over. As I smoke this it somehow reminds me of a more sweet/ less smokey Frog Morton. They are obviously not the same blend but that's what comes to mind as I smoke. Weird. The blend smokes well all the way to the bottom and the last few puffs taste like a light menthol flavor, reminds me of an after dinner mint. I really enjoy this finish and I much prefer it to the ashy finish most burleys such as my beloved Prince provides me. Other then a bit at the start I don't detect much in the way of bite here but watch that cadence or you may miss some of the flavors Canal Boat offers. Smokes cool and fairly dry but I did notice an increase in cleaner use when smoked in larger bowls. That said I did enjoy it most in a large Bjarne churchwarden and largish Boswell nose warmer. I thought it underperformed in a cob, strange for a burley, so perhaps in this case that moisture helps rather then harms the smoke. I also found that if you ash the pipe as you go, prior to tamping, it will reduce the bitter component. I found the room note pleasant and heard "it's fine" from the wife so I can't see this one offending anyone. Nothing to fear nicotine wise here but I'm basically immune fwiw.

Conclusion: I liked Canal Boat and smoked through my tin quite fast. It's a great smoke when your craving something sweet but not sickeningly so..I will add another tin on my next order as it has earned a spot in my rotation.

Good job C&D 3 stars..

Canal Boat is Grape Nuts for your pipe; a very chunky cube cut blend which is light on the nose. It's initially a bit hard to get going, but once it does, expect 90 minutes of gentle smoking pleasure in a large, wide bowl. I first tried CB in a Mr. Brog cherrywood potbelly from Poland. This is a calming, relaxed smoke without a dimension of flavors. Aromas are toasty, warm and sweet. I taste very little Latakia here. This is one of the coolest burleys on the tongue. A gentle smoking experience I'd like to enjoy every now and again. Nice tin art, too!

I bought this the other day, and was lucky enough to have a tin that was already aged almost two years, and I gotta say I liked it quite a bit. When I opened the tin, I was greeted with a nice earthy scent, mixed with a bit of latakia and just a touch of something sweet. The cubed burley looks and packs great. The taste and room aroma are pleasing to me. You can taste the earthiness of the burley and the latakia comes through just a enough to notice it. If you are a heavy latakia lover than this isn't it. This is burley, with a bit of latakia, just enough to let you know you are having some, and just a hint of something sweet, the cavendish. This is a nicely done, recommended tobacco and I will buy another and keep some lying around. The tobaccos all blend together just right for what it is. Almost forgot to say, it burns a bit more warm than my other blends, but I didn't get any tongue bite, and I like a room full of smoke, so I puff at a fairly brisk pace. It burnt down to a nice, grey ash and left barely anything.

Let me begin by saying I like C & D’s Canal Boat.

The tin aroma is sweet, and reminds me of apples. And I happen to like apples.

The taste is latakia forward, running in tandem with the apple-like sweetness. And the two make the run together to the bottom of the bowl.

Taste is, of course, very personal. What one person likes, another dislikes.

For Canal Boat, the deciding factor, if you’re going to like this blend or not, is if you like a sweet latakia mixture. It’s as simple as that.

I happen to like the sweet and smokey taste. So for me, Canal Boat is a winner.

Another thing in Canal Boat’s favor is that I don’t get the burley bitterness, which I don’t like. And since burley is a major component in this blend that’s a good thing. I also like the chunky cut, which I prefer over ribbon.

Canal Boat, IMO, is a repeatable, but not an all day smoke. The latakia is too strong for all day smoking. At least for me.

The pipes I used to test drive this blend were a Falcon, Peterson Spigot 406, and a Peterson Killarney 406.

The bottom line? I like Canal Boat and will keep a tin or two around for occasional smoking on those days when I want a sweet and smokey smoke.

Heartily recommended.

This review is of the "Constipated Cockroach" version, tin #151 of 200 that I won on Ebay. The tin shows a cartoon cockroach sitting on the head with a pipe stuck in his angry looking face, reading a pipe magazine with fiber puffs, milk of magnesia, ex-lax, etc. lying about his feet. I have had the tin opened for some time now and the tobacco is bone dry but still pleasant to smoke. And pleasant to smoke is how I would describe it. What's in a name, after all? Canal Boat is perhaps a better (though less amusing) name, because smoking this is like a pleasant boat trip on a serene canal. I'm not really a burley guy, but this cubed burley is mild, with 0.000000% bite, and the touch of Latakia and Cavendish are a perfect complement. There is also a slight bitterness to it that I find intriguing. I will have to try some of the newer incarnation (think my tin is 2001?) and see how it compares. I have about eight small bowlfuls of this Craig-signed masterpiece left, and will savor them well when I can bear to crack this unique tin.

To start with, this is the first so matured tobacco I have ever smoked.

I found a box of the old Cornell & Diehl packaging. It is a strange flavored/English mixture. The Latakia gives a peculiar flavor, though it is absorbed more than in other tobaccos. The perique cubes are not easily burnt. Good tobacco, which does not cause coughing.

It has, though, a prominent ?burnt straw? taste and aroma, present in all Cornell &Diehl tobaccos.

The tin note is nutty, oaky, slightly sweet and smells strongly like traditional Chinese medicine. It's off-putting to the point I was afraid I had made a mistake in ordering two tins. Boy was I wrong.

At first light it smokes exactly how it smells, like if burley was a slightly sweet cough medicine. It soon mellows down to a more normal burley blend and adds in notes of cocoa, coffee and the caramelized char of a good sirloin steak. The medicine flavor and aroma fall to the background, but hang on the entire duration of the bowl. It smokes cool and dry down to a fine mottled gray ash.

Canal boat is a very good marketing name, but this blend could've easily been called Train Wreck; like that one Facebook friend who's life is a series of self inflicted disasters, you know you shouldn't like it, but you just can't stop watching. There's something in my mind that tells me I shouldn't like this blend and I should just get rid of it, yet I just keep relighting, smoking and enjoying.

I recommend this tobacco to anyone looking to try something that's unlike anything else.

This is a chunky cut, but is never a problem to load. I tend to pack this one a little on the loose side and dont have any problems. This is a sweeter blend with the addition of the sweetened cavendish. The nutty burley is in the forefront with the sweet cavendish following close behind. I didnt detect very much latakia but it does seem to be there in small amounts. I like this every once in a while and would recommend it!

This is for the crossover smoker. It combines the best elements of an Aromatic/English blend. The Burley is nutty and the black cavendish sweet. It is the Latakia that adds that certain something to the blend. This can be described as a COMPLEX aromatic. It stays naturally sweet with an English edge to it. A great all day smoke. You must be careful puffing though, the cube cut burley heats up the pipe quickly if not handled properly. 3 of 4 stars.

I really enjoy this blend from time to time. When you open the tin, you are greeted by wonderful cubed burley, medium-cut latakia and cavedish. The tin aroma is nutty and smoky. Packs easily, I prefer it in Group 5-6 bowls. At first light, you get the typical grassy odor common to burley. After relight, (which will probably not need anymore lighting due to the perfect moisture)it settles into a nice smooth, semi-sweet smoke. This is could be an all day blend. Towards the bottom of the bowl,a nice interplay between the sweet cavendish and nutty burley intensifies with the latakia as the background. One last note, puff slowly as this can nip the tongue. Aging this blend smoothes out the bite as well.
