Cornell & Diehl Pegasus

(3.34)
Three burley tobaccos, two Virginias, and a touch of unsweetened black cavendish form a classic American blend, hearkening back to the days when burley was king in American pipe tobacco blends.
Notes: Reminiscent of old original Bond Street blend.

Burley dominates the smoke from start to finish. For a couple puffs at the start I tasted some Virginia, but it promptly disappeared never to rear it's head again. The cavendish does a nice job of evening out the smoke.

The burleys are very nutty and earthy and oaty. The extremely limited presence of the Virginia's were very nice and sweet.

It burns on the hotter side so a slow cadence is important. I would not recommend this to beginner pipe smokers. It is an advanced blend catering towards burley lovers only. To be completely honest, since most of my experience is in VAs and VaPers, I am not a burley expert. However, I have been smoking Night Train for many years so that is the benchmark I judge burley blends by.

Tin note is fantastic, probably the best smelling burley tin I've ever owned.

For me, Pegasus smokes very much like a codger blend. In fact it reminds me more than a little bit of Five Brothers. On the sweet side, and slightly spicy, but mainly nutty burley flavor. Leaves a little tingle on the tongue and will bite if you push it. Pegasus doesn’t come close to the upper echelon of burley blends, but still, it’s plenty enjoyable. Another C&D burley blend, infamous and divisive in certain circles, Haunted Bookshop has its share of lovers and haters. For the HB haters, give Pegasus a try. It should provide a welcome alternative.

One reviewer declared this has a topping — I believe this is inaccurate. Another wants to call it a Burley/Virginia. Give me a break. Just because a blend has a tiny bit of some named tobacco does not mean it becomes a new thing. This is a burley blend pure and simple. And it is delicious.

There are good Va/Bur’s on the market which are shooting for a hybrid of Virginia and Burley but this is not that.

This is burley with a small twist. While there is nothing wrong with a straight burley, adding the uncased Black Cavendish and a bit of VA widens the audience and invites people to approach and be welcomed. Gets stronger as the bowl is smoked. An airy smell that reminds of tobacco blends before the modern times.

Best when you want a stronger experience. The Virginias and uncased Cav modify the burley without adding any appreciable sweetness. Like sanding off slight sharp edges but leaving the wooden furniture solid and what it is supposed to be.

Very good stuff indeed.

Burley forward. Dry, the black cavendish if it is there is almost non-existant in adding any flavor. One fo the flattest tasting tobaccos I have ever had and C&D I am suprised. Even the burley did not have any taste. Upon opening the tin, it was dry, very low moisture. Lit well burned ok, a bit of bite.

This Bob Runowski classic is a mixture of cube cut and irregularly cut ribbon of various widths. I identified a little red and gold ribbon, a whole lot of chestnut brown leaf, and maybe 5% black cavendish. The initial pouch aroma is sweet and sour. After some time to breathe, this develops a raisin and chocolate aroma. With even more time exposed to oxygen, the pouch aroma takes on a sweet, earthy, funky quality. This is a straightforward tobacco, generally lacking in complexity, but it is always rich and full tasting. The flavor profile centers around a toasty, nutty, earthy tobacco essence.

This could easily be an all day / everyday blend for the VABur lover. Tastes even better with black coffee.
