Paul Olsen No. 7000

(3.21)
Based on a blend over 103 years old, #7000 contains a very generous portion of top quality latakia with some of the finest Orientals. Then finished off with a black cavendish and Turkish Samsun for a full-bodied traditional English.

This being my first review, I am not sure it should be considered a fair one...... the reason is that my particular tin of 7000 was opened about 3 years ago. Perhaps it has worked positive wonders for this tobacco blend; perhaps it has destroyed some of the better qualities it once had...... It is beyond me to positively know. As with rifle barrels made on the same machine, each barrel will shoot differently....... so be it with pipe tobacco.

Surprise originally greeted me 3 years ago upon opening the tin, I did not expect such an overall dark colored tobacco. I have forgotten how it packed then; it packs very well now. I do not use the 3 layer method anymore, I simply pack thin layer after thin layer with light and judicious tamping. Very gentle.

Upon light up, the flavor is full and thoroughly enveloping. I am overcome with the thought of please let this continue to arrive in such a wonderful, full, surround sound. Samsun certainly does play its part and does play it well, but the symphony is made complete and full by the orientals...... such a sweet symphony in perfect note orchestration. Strong, full, yet plesantly sweet...... no tongue bite for me, though I am terrible about smoking a pipe too quickly...... too anxious to enjoy the feast. Even if smoked too fast, this will not turn into a rocket sled on the end of a stick.

It did leave a plesant taste in my mouth and that most wonderful of feelings...... wanting another bowl immediately. Fully and cleanly burned to the bottom of the bowl, this one has earned its way to the top of my favorites list. I will stockpile this one..........

As simply a side observation, I found this now to be sold as My Own Blend....#7000..... only a thought.

RIPDUNDEE

I love this stuff and have been smoking it exclusively since I bought my tin about three weeks ago. The addition of Turkish Samsun really makes this blend unique. Folks who enjoy other English styles like I do (e.g., Penzance and the many Dunhill offerings),will probably like this too.

This blend has definitely one of the best Oriental parts on the market and it would be worth smoking just for that, but it has many other good characteristics. The packing and lighting are easy due to the perfect moisture level and almost shag cut, the latakia used is one of great quality and smokiness, the Cavendish sweetens a little the mixture but it isn't very detectable in the amount of flavour generated by the orientals and the latakia. The body is light enough to consider it an all day blend. The fast burning can cause some problems to your tongue if you don't pay attention at your smoking pace, but nothing compared to the majority of Virginia and aromatic blends.

This blend has a generous portion of Latakia but far be it from me to tell you whether that percentage is 15% or 20%, 30% or? My palate is not that discerning. Regardless, there is too much Latakia in this blend for me to smoke it on a regular basis. I like it but it falls into my ? I smoke it occasionally? category. The heavy, rich flavor in this tobacco is right up front. You can taste this tobacco without lighting your pipe and especially before a DGT light. It has a pronounced, bold and plentiful earthy, full, woodsy, smoky flavor but it is not as sweet as some other English blends. It also left me with a strong, lingering aftertaste that I have experienced with only one other blend: Penzance. Such a strong aftertaste should make PO MOB 7000 your last bowl of the day if you smoke other lighter blends. PO MOB 7000 also makes for a great smoke after a full meal.

I did not experience any bite or ?stinging? with this blend as some others have noted. Generally speaking, I personally find that English blends are the least likely to bite and, in my opinion, have much better burning qualities than most burley based or VA blends. PO MOB 7000 is a little too ?Latakia heavy? and rich for me for the humid, summer months but I am looking forward to smoking my cellared 7000 remains on crisp, clear, mid to late fall afternoons when it would fill the bill. PO MOB 7000 is truly for those of you who love heavily laden Latakia blends.

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this tobacco 6522 out of ?7000.?

This has plenty of latakia and oriental flavor and is well balanced although the latakia component is a bit too much for my taste. The big problem for me is that on occasion it creates a stinging sensation on the lips, very odd. I usually smoke this late in the evening and it satisfies. This is not among my favorite English/Scottish blends, and I doubt I will buy more after my stash is gone. There are just too many very good latakia/oriental blends available that are more friendly. As others have noted this is an old style English blend with an unique taste. Unlike many other English blends which tend to become "ashy" or "muddy" in flavor - each component is bright and strong on its own - yet does not overpower any other ingredient.

The predominant flavor is woodsy smoke, a touch of sweetness, and a bit of tanginess from the oriental herb. Foggy evenings and rainy mornings would make perfect atmosphere for this tobacco.

I can not say that I would smoke this regularly, but there is a flavor here worth exploring and revisiting.

This is a full strength English mixture that is quite bold in the nose and pallet. As the description above states, this blend is comprised of high quality, exotic tobaccos that form the backbone of the English oriental blends. Cavendish is a wonderful component that lends extra complexity to this smoke. The samsum adds alot of spice and depth as well. This is a quality Oriental mixture but, there are many others that I prefer to this blend. Maybe if they sold a bulk version, I would keep it on hand.

This blend didn?t do a lot for me initially, but soon grew on me to the point that I really looked forward to smoking a bowl of it each evening for the duration of the 100g tin. Must be the Samsun component that gives this blend such a wonderful and distinctive Oriental flavoring. Whatever the source, this is the best Danish-blended English blend I have yet tried. Very nice and reasonably priced. 7K is another great example of an old-school tobacco blend, and definately deserves to be tried by all English/Oriental lovers. My biggest complaint about this blend is the tin. When I opened mine, the tobacco was very dry. I also didn?t detect any kind of ?whoosh? vacuum-breaking sound, either, and began to suspect that the tin?s ?pop-top? lid might have failed to hold the vacuum seal. This makes me a little wary of doing any long-term cellaring of 7000 in the tin.

This one is a bit unusual for me as with the exception of a Perique blend or two I smoke Latakia blends all the time and they are my favorite. This one didn't work. The inside of my mouth burned with every puff. I don't understand as the taste was excellent, but something in this put me in real pain. No way can I smoke or recommend this blend. Maybe some day I will give it a second try, but I will sure have something to sooth my mouth ready. A big thumbs down along with a big question mark since I have never had this reaction before.

I have gone on record before saying that, in my opinion, a marriage latakia and cavendish is never a good idea. With this blend, I think I should reconsider.

There is a significant (but not overwhelming) latakia presence and, yes, I can detect the cavendish as well. However, instead of the bland, murky flavour that I've noticed with other famous latakia/cavendish blends (no need to name names here), this one really seems to come alive in a pleasant sort of way. I also did not detect any dry-mouth for which latakias are famous (at least in my estimation), and tongue bite was non-existent.

Smoking this is pure pleasure.
