Paul Olsen No. 222 Flake
(3.60)
A luxurious spicy smell of Virginia escapes when you open this tin of flake treated tobacco. This hand-blended flake has matured and developed under pressure - in this way the tobacco acquires a particular tone and a special harmony.

Paul Olsen - No.222 Flake.
The tin contains rectangular, medium brown, mid-sized flakes. As usual with Paul O' the moisture amount is perfect so no time has to be wasted drying them. I easily crumble some, load, and light.
I find 222 takes to ignition with great ease and then gives quite a steady burn. The smoke coming from it has to be sipped with a little care though; it's nothing atrocious, but it can give my tongue a slight nip if it's puffed too hard.
The flavour? Okay, it's not bad but I find it a touch boring after about 15 minutes; I can't taste any Latakia in the smoke, the only tobacco flavour I get is a sweet Virginia one. Now, this is a good Virginia taste, but it's not enough to satisfy on its own, it needs some Lat' smokiness or Perique spice to liven it up a bit.
The amount of nicotine sits well with me; it's just below medium.
This is a good blend, but like I said, it's too boring a smoke for my palate; it's still worth a recommendation though as although I don't like it, it's still a good blend
Three stars.

I've always enjoyed the Paul Olsen blends - really quality leaf and attention to detail is never missed. I don't think I've ever found a wayward stem in any of the My Own Blends. I'm not sure if 222 is still being made but I really liked it. A lighter than usual Ltakia/Virginia combo. My notes from when I smoked this one back in 2009 indicated a nuance of Oriental leaf, although I do not see that in the TRC descriptive. If you enjoy basic smoky Latakia with Virginia, and especially if you like it lighter rather than bold, No. 222 would be a good choice if you can find it anymore.
