Sutliff Tobacco Company Cringle Flake (2023)

(2.75)
The fifth installment of Sutliff's highly anticipated, seasonal pipe tobacco, Cringle Flake 2023 is a blend of aged, decade-old Red Virginias, 2003 vintage Perique, and stoved Katerini. This incredible holiday mixture presents an exceptional flavor right out of the tin, with a deep richness sure to improve even further with additional age. In this blend, whole leaves are pressed into cakes and then sliced into thick flakes, making this blend primed for aging while its unique profile benefits from the singular flavors of its stoved Katerini. Naturally sweet with spicy, piquant undertones, the result is incredibly complex with notes of stone fruits, earthy spice, and molasses.

Tin note of pungent vinegar, sour fruit and mild spices. Tobacco is a thick flake of yellowish brown and brown with a little tan mixed in. Moisture content is great. No drying needed. Flakes are a bit tough to rub out. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No added flavoring detected. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with notes of dry tart fruit, spices, mild floral incense, fermented sour vinegary, very savory, zesty citrus, wood, bread, burned sugar, a mildly spicy and sweet earthy grassy background note, and a very peppery retro. Virginia barely beats out Orientals for the lead with Perique supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
