Sutliff Tobacco Company Cringle Flake (2023)
(3.25)
The fifth installment of Sutliff's highly anticipated, seasonal pipe tobacco, Cringle Flake 2023 is a blend of aged, decade-old Red Virginias, 2003 vintage Perique, and stoved Katerini. This incredible holiday mixture presents an exceptional flavor right out of the tin, with a deep richness sure to improve even further with additional age. In this blend, whole leaves are pressed into cakes and then sliced into thick flakes, making this blend primed for aging while its unique profile benefits from the singular flavors of its stoved Katerini. Naturally sweet with spicy, piquant undertones, the result is incredibly complex with notes of stone fruits, earthy spice, and molasses.

Sutliff Tobacco Co. - Cringle Flake (2023).
As with all the previous Cringle Flakes, the 'flakes' are very thick. To call this Cringle Kake wouldn't be far off the mark!! The blend smells a little of vinegar, with a plummy-fruitiness. This tin has smack-on moistness, so just pop it, crumble, load n light!
The flavour isn't of overly spicy Perique. The Perique is raisin-like, rich, strangely smooth. The Virginia boosts the fruity flavour with it's own red-fruit sweetness, some dough, and a little honey. The burn from it's good, although it has a tendency to go quite fast. So, crumble the tobacco into a coarse texture to abate the speed. I haven't experienced any tongue bite, even when forced.
Nicotine: above medium. Room-note: not great.
Cringle 2023? A good blend, but it falls just shy of full marks. Recommended:
Three stars

This did not meet my expectations it was very dry flake..flavor also was very one 1 dimensional..I can taste only Virginia mild fruit and nearly all of the flavor is gone no Perique or anything else....I was looking forward to this and spent a pretty buck ...highly un ---recommended.It seems over dried over aged and improper moisture content...not impressed.(Zero)Orientals whose name is ridiculous as a category anyways. Update I added a humidity pack and it helped I must admit at the end of the bowl got a lovely burgundy flavor also a spicy oak flavor and some vinegar.. I am going to change this to 3.5 stars. It does smoke well and I like it now.

Tin note of pungent vinegar, sour fruit and mild spices. Tobacco is a thick flake of yellowish brown and brown with a little tan mixed in. Moisture content is great. No drying needed. Flakes are a bit tough to rub out. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No added flavoring detected. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with notes of dry tart fruit, spices, mild floral incense, fermented sour vinegary, very savory, zesty citrus, wood, bread, burned sugar, a mildly spicy and sweet earthy grassy background note, and a very peppery retro. Virginia barely beats out Orientals for the lead with Perique supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
