Pipe Republic Westgate-on-Sea
(4.00)
Westgate-on-Sea is a charming little village bordering the famous seaside resort of Margate as well as the village of Birchington-on-Sea. It is located in the far southeast of England, on the Thanet Peninsula in Kent.
The predominantly mild climate, however, is always marred by its exposed location and proximity to the North Sea. Thus, as a resident, one must be quite accustomed to a "stiff breeze" and a lot of salty air.
With so much "sea aroma" in the air, a tobacco may also like to be stronger in aroma. A Dark Fired tobacco, namely Kentucky, is best suited for this. This, together with a small portion of Virginia for better burning, is hot pressed for some time in flake presses. The process is quite complex, because a lot of steam has to be generated. However, it mellows the tobacco, takes away its pungency and leads to a "maturing process in fast motion". This process was still very common in the United Kingdom a few decades ago, but today it is the absolute exception.
The tobacco is loosened, dries, matures and is packed in 100g tins. When smoked, it has a very intense taste. Spicy, smoky, but at the same time not strong.
Perfect for a walk by the sea, an autumn day in the woods, an end of the day around the campfire.

Deep dark is the Westgate and smells already in the tin intensely sour, slightly smoky and above all very very leathery.
This is only a foretaste of the board of flavors that awaits the connoisseur in the pipe. Because the Westgate makes no compromises here. Strong, pithy aromas of black bread, leather, tart fermented acidity. But also sweet, caramel nutty tips.
I have to think of strong, unflavored rum here. The Westgate goes very well with this, by the way.

Very sour notes, right from the tin, also dark bread, some floral notes and little to no sweetness. Deep dark in color are the broken flakes. This is what welcomes you after popping the tin open. It talks to you: I am STRONG and full of POWER!
This is the Westgate-on-Sea.
The baccy is a bit moist from the tin, but wont cause any trouble. Just watch out wit the filling, the tobacco raises after lighting.
Spicy, smoky, delicious floral notes from the KY. The VA is in the background, the KY just dominates it. It is there to smooth out the experience.
It makes a great afternoon smoke. 4 stars!
