A fellow piper from the club brought this in today and was nice enough to share. I have tried Old Dominion and cannot nor will I even try to compare the two as my expertise in the types of tobacco used, toppings and or casings, method of processing etc. is just very limited. I can tell you this is a really smooth and tasteful flake tobacco. For further detail read JimInks review. As he states this is a flake while Old Dominion is a crumble cake. A good smoke, and glad I was able to sample it.

Old Dominion Flake
This is a tasty, mild VaPer. The Virginias take the lead with a bready, slightly sweet floral note. Since we smoke the entire blend at the same point in time — the goal of the blender is that we ‘get’ the blend as a whole — I don’t see much upside in describing the component parts other than in rough terms.
The selection of the Virginias feels like an expert had a hand here, and so I assume. There is little in the way of an acidic component, but there is a tiny bit of Lakeland-esque perfume. I don’t get much in the way of citrus.
The Perique takes a supporting role. It is mild and slightly sour, not the luscious full-on plum or raisin one might expect or hope to encounter. There is very slight pepper here but not enough such that one can really taste it independently.
Of course, all of this go to what one wants in a VaPer — I look for a greater presence of plum or raisin. You are likely different. The Virginias, the lead, are delicious, and so I’d recommend Old Dominion Flake to anyone who wants to dip their toe into a Virginia/Perique blend. This is not a classic version by any stretch of the imagination, but it is very good.
3.5 stars out of 4 for a good effort, rounded down.
