Sutliff Tobacco Company Cringle Flake (2021)
(3.50)
After being aged for over 20 years, US grown Red Virginias are Cavendished and combined with Mark Ryan's 2003 Perique to create a one-of-a-kind vintage blend. The whole leaf is then pressed and sliced into broken flakes to provide a smoke that harkens back to the "good ole days."

The tin is sitting next to me about a month after I opened it and had my first bowl. Every couple of days I smoked it again. Different time of the day, different pipe. With enough tobacco to fill the last bowl, I open the tin.
Still, a month after opening it - VINEGAR! It jumps out of the tin and fights its way through my nostrils. My girlfriend is sitting next to me. "What is that smell? Are you making BBQ sauce?"
I'm surprised that the word "Vinegar" hasn't appeared more in the other reviews. Are you really smelling anything else out of that tin?
The smoke is dominated by zesty, pungent, vinegary, lemony notes, musty, fermented taste. I get a bit of mushroom. The retrohale can be very sharp. However, at a certain point things begin to flatten, mellow-out, and cool down. For the rest of the bowl, I'm getting a very sweet, strawberry-type flavor with just a hint of spice and red wine. Is the war over? I guess it is. From here on I'm a relaxed mellow environment.
What I taste in flavor translates to the mechanics. I tend to struggle with getting it to stay lit for the first part of the bowl. Drying it out definitely helps, but hasn't yet solved the issue. Once that initial struggle with bombastic flavor and refusal to stay lit ends, it stays lit through the end. Unlike most Virginias, this one has smoked best for me in a wider bowl such as a pot shape.
Medium in body, mild-medium in strength. Not very comfortable to smoke on the go. I´ve had the best bowls while seating and relaxing. Not an all-day smoke.
Now, Sutliff has this process that they do on their Virginias, particularly red Virginias that gives it this very zesty and aged feeling. It's most pronounced in their 515 RC-1 blend. But that also means that while I love the fact of this being a very aged Virginia and Perique, it also didn't translate especially. 515 RC-1 is really similar to Cringle Flake. And I mean it in a good way because I love 515. But at the same time it means that Cringle Flake ain't that special…
Despite that, on a good day this blend is fantastic. Not the best Virginia-Perique out there, but full of flavor and joy. I was tempted to give it 4 stars, but since it's just not this top-notch level, I'll give it a 3.

Ok, my first review after having lurked all over this site for years. I'll put it this way, it took me until halfway down the bowl before I started to draw comparisons to Christmas Cheer. After that, I buy into the comparison. I picked up a few extra tins to age, so we'll see if the comparability moves up the bowl over time. Full disclosure, I usually smoke flakes in smaller bowl pipes. Those that smoke flakes in larger or wider bowl pipes may have a different smoking experience than mine.

Well. I waited a few days to review this as my first impression was meh at best. I will start by saying I'm a Va/Per whore to begin with so I wanted to love it. I DO however like it. I do not dry my tobacco at all in the tobaccos I smoke, however this review is after 3 hours on a tray. This tobacco comes very wet. Not what I'd call moist , but a sticky tobacco. The tin note is of ancient fermenty tobaccos. Tart, earth, ripe dried fruits, vinegar. Smoking it straight from a freshly opened tin I was extremely disappointed. Singular with a ridiculous amount of relights. But the 3 hour drying time yielded a slow burning bready and tangy smoke. The room note is very bakery fresh. Like sourdough. And at last the Va/Per experience I was hoping for. I will probably trade a tin of this. But it is a worthy addition to this new tradition of tobaccos. As one of my You Tube channels I followed stated, "I wish they hadn't Cavendished the Virginia" as I believe these ancient tobaccos would have been less singular if they hadn't. That's just my opinion. But it is still good.
