Bengal Slices Bengal Slices Single Barrel
(3.25)
The Bengal Slices family continues to grow, this time with a limited-edition blend with a very special and unique story behind it. The folks behind the brand were told about the availability of a fresh, empty bourbon barrel from the best-known single-barrel brand on the market. We can't tell you the name, but we'll tell you that it's also known for its collection of racehorse bottle stoppers. They selected a special tobacco blend with a more modest amount of Latakia, so the infusion of bourbon flavor would be clearly noticeable. The tobacco was laid to rest in the barrel for a full month to allow the infusion of buttery-smooth bourbon flavor to take hold. Then the tobacco was pressed into a crumble cake to further embed the flavor into the leaf.
Since the barrel can only be used once since the essence of the premium bourbon evaporates fairly quickly, they were limited to a relatively small number of tins that could be produced. The result is a very different blend with a mellow English blend flavor supported by the gentle infusion of caramelly bourbon flavor. Be sure to act quickly. These won't last long.

Upon first opening the tin I'm greeted with 5 slices of dark brown speckled krumble kake. I immediately smell the bourbon. The bourbon barrel aged Bengal Slices have just a bit more moisture when compared to the original Bengal Slices.
I remove one of the flakes, it's rather delicate and crumbles easily. Upon first light I notice how very smooth and mellow it is. Compared to the original Bengal Slices the Latakia and the licorice flavoring are subdued and only lightly detectable. This tobacco reminds me of a tobacco that has years of age on it.
For me this barrel aged version is a welcome addition to the Bengal Slices line up. When a person isn't in the mood for the bold in your face flavors of Bengal Slices, the barrel aged is a quieter more relaxing interpretation. I get the same basic flavors, albeit much softer, with perhaps just a touch of sweetness from the imbued bourbon.
The tobacco itself is very well behaved. No gurgle, bitterness or bite. Easily stays lit. For anybody who's tried Bengal Slices and thought the flavors were overwhelming, maybe this bourbon barrel aged version will be just the ticket.
