Wilke Pipe Tobacco Sweet Street

(3.50)
Toasty, nutty, earthy, woody burley with sugary black cavendish plays a support role. The rich rum topping takes a very small lead over the toasty nougat, followed by the chocolate and vanilla.

The toasty, nutty, earthy, woody burley is the star component. The sugary black cavendish plays a support role. The grassy, tart and tangy citrusy, bready, lightly sugary Virginia sits in the third slot position. The rich rum topping takes a very small lead over the toasty nougat, followed by the chocolate and vanilla. A few drops of whiskey are in the mix as well. The toppings sublimate the tobaccos to a fair extent, with the burley being the most obvious varietal. The strength is a couple of steps short of the center of mild to medium. Has a mild nic-hit. The taste is a notch past the center of mild to medium. Won’t bite or get harsh. Has no rough edges. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a very consistent, smoothly toasty sweet, nutty flavor that translates to the lightly lingering, very pleasant after taste and room notes. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. An all day comfortable smoke. Three and a half stars.

Sweet Street has had me rolling through the ole memory bank for several bowls now. I was in a bit of a quandary with this one! I really like this cavendish and burly blend, with a smattering of Virginia(even though it’s not listed here). What had me was the exact taste,. Rum, Whiskey, chocolate, vanilla I get but there is something else. Almost a buttery taste, real butter, not that oleo crap. Then out of the blue it hit me. Butter Rum Life Savers. Smooth and delicious. Quality Nutty Burley, smooth Cavendish, and the concoction of the topping. Dang fine smoke. 4 in my pipe.

Not being as dissecting a smoker as JimInks, I'll take his word on what he wrote. For myself, I was practically intoxicated by alcohol (?) fumes coming from the plastic bag Sweet Street was mailed in. This is not a "sweet" mixture, although it is aromatic. There's a buttery coating within that envelopes the tongue. An unusual blend for this typically non-aromatic smoker. While it won't become a regular in my rotation of Balkans, VA/Pers, and nutty Burleys, it may fit in somewhere within my occasional reaches for the luscious chocolates blended by Wilke's John Brandt.

I ordered this as a, "Let's see if it's just another weak aro" Wow! It's complex, surprising and highly satisfying. The retro-hale is another surprise. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut of the same ol'blend. This is not a same ol' same ol'. Didn't bite or get hot, even though I pushed it for experimental purposes.
