Sutliff Tobacco Company TS-20 Louisiana Perique
(4.00)
Grown in St. James Parish, Louisiana, the only place where it's made, Perique is a unique tobacco. Once harvested, it's compressed, heated, and fermented, giving it its distinctive peppery flavor. Sutliff's TS-20 Louisiana Perique is in ribbon cut form, perfect for use as a blending component and can be smoked straight if desired.

My family has a long history with this truffle of tobaccoes. My great grandfather, a Choctaw from Mississippi, moved to Louisiana at the turn of the twentieth. He raised his own backy then made his own perique with it (in a hollowed out log of all things), he would then add a bit of smoked fire cured and roll it into ropes for smoking. This might not be the original Native American perique like my great grandfather made;but, it is one of the best bulk perique blending baccys out there. Like Tobasco, I put this in almost everything. The musty, earthy, peppery nuance of this legendary swamp leaf will add depth of character to even the most bland blends, or turn an excellent blend into an exceptional blend. Once you've established the proportions you need with the blend, pop it in the cellar and let it age. You'll be amazed at the result. The bulk offer makes it really easy to purchase the exact amount needed. As little or as much as you need; and, at a reasonable cost. Definitely recommend for craft blending.
Update (FYI) Perique ferments through an anaerobic process, and this process continues even after it has been packaged for sale; however, once it is exposed to air, the process becomes aerobic. This can lead to the tobacco actually becoming rotten. If this happens at the manufacturing facility, it is thrown away. The bad news is that some tobacconist are not so careful. If perique is not stored properly, it will take on a greyish cast and produce the classic "Merde de Cheval" barnyard sent. Soaking the perique in high-proof alcohol stops this process as it stops any further fermentation. The perique will then have a musty, mushroom-like flavor instead of stewed-fruit in wine. If it still tastes and smells like dog poop, throw it out and get a full refund as it is rotten to the core. Hope this helps.

Jar note of mildly sweet, pungent and musty vegetation. The dark brown and black tobacco ribbons are a little moist, some may prefer to dry it a bit. Some chunks look like ready rub and may need a little attention. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium to strong. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and very consistent, with notes of leather, moderately spicy, acidic, musty wood, rich earth, fermented vegetation, mildly bitter, toasted bread a tart and tangy fruit background note, and a moderately peppery retro. Room note is tolerable to strong, and aftertaste is great.
