Sillem's Copenhagen Blend

(3.24)
Virginia, burley, and black cavendish topped with the flavor of Amaretto and toasted nuts.
Notes: Sillem’s Copenhagen Blend smells like a mild winter’s evening by the fire with your favorite libation. It’s a mild aromatic blend of Virginias, burleys and creamy black cavendish. Some sites, as this one used to, note that perique is a component. We have decided to go by Smoking Pipes description.

Blonde to black choppy ribbon cut with a tin note of one of the worst goopy aromatics in existence. It was a rich-sour fruity smell that nearly caused me to chuck this one altogether. Glad I didn't! This came moist like a Virginia blend rather than wet and sticky like most of the pipeshop aromatics one encounters. With shaking fingers, I soldiered on.

This is one of those aromatics that make me wish all the U.S blenders of those wet and gloppy aros had studied blending with a European master blender. The tin aroma came out in the taste but it was mild and mellow - a definite flavor booster. And underneath was the distinctive flavor of actual tobacco! Mostly a nice Virginia base with a little burley muscularity and and fruity perique... and of course that flavoring, which may be amaretto, as it's kind of sweet/sour and nutty. Room note was non-smoker friendly as well. In other words, this blend is made for lovers of tobacco that want a mild shot of non-tobacco flavor and a pleasant dose of room freshener, rather than a full onslaught of artificial tastes and aromas. I think this could satisfy a lot of aro smokers that also enjoy the taste of tobacco. This strikes me as a blend that could have been made by Steven Books if his customers asked him to create a blend that every pipesmokers wife would sniff in the jar and buy based on the nose. Really well done, and I wish I liked the flavoring more. I will probably never smoke it again but I respect the accomplishment here... tobacco flavor, aromatic room note. Recommended as a HUGE step up from the typical black cavendishes and jellybean flavors so prevalent today.

I have to say I'm a bit confused here. The above list of ingredients matches those listed at PipesandCigars.com, but the following is the description from smokingpipes.com.

"Virginia, Burley, and Black Cavendish topped with the flavor of Amaretto and toasted nuts."

I taste no Perique in this blend, but my palette has been known to lie to me on occasion. I don't know who's right, but I do know that this is an excellent smoke. I can easily detect the quality Virginias and Burley. The topping tastes a bit like coconut to me. A very sweet coconut. Now I'm really confused. Ameretto should have a flavor akin to almonds. In spite of my massive confusion, I like this blend. The sweetness may wear on me over time, but it hasn't yet. 3+ stars.

The sweet burley provides a lot of nuts, earth, wood, and bread as it takes a light lead. The Virginia provides some tart and tangy citrus, grass, bread, sugar, mild floralness, spice, and a touch of acidity as an important supporting player. The creamy sweet black cavendish is not far behind the Virginia in terms of effect. The amaretto and toasted nuts toppings moderately tone down the tobaccos. It has the typical Danish spice notes that some have thought came from perique, but it doesn’t. The strength and nic-hit are a step short of the medium mark. The taste is medium. Won’t get harsh or bite, but I recommend a slow puffing cadence due to the spice content. Has a few light rough edges. Burns clean and slightly warm at a reasonable rate with a very consistent nutty, sweet, spicy, mildly floral flavor that translates to the pleasantly lingering after taste. The room note is very pleasant. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. An all day smoke. Three and a half stars.

I bought this tin because of the description as I love perique and vapors and I was somewhat annoyed when I opened the tin and the tin note smelled sweetly like an aromatic. But I like a good aromatic so I moved forward. First it is very moist upon opening so I let it dry a few days in an open container. After drying I, loaded a pipe with it and sat back to see what I had here. It is a short ribbon cut with colors ranging from a light khaki to a dark brown. The first thing I noticed upon lighting up was the heavenly room note. It smells wonderful and I had many favorable comments about it. It loaded quite nice, and it burned without all the goopyness of a lot of aromatics. It leaves a nice fluffy grey ash, and little dottle in the bottom of the pipe. The blend is full bodies because of the burley, has a little spice because of the perique, but little of the va comes through because of the added flavor which to me tastes very much like a creamy butterscotch. It is a very pleasant smoke, has no bite at all, and I am impressed with it.

I very much enjoyed this blend but it's description is very misleading. If you don't like aromatics, you might be unhappy with it. worth a try though as it is a very good blend.

What do you call a blend that smells like a full on aromatic in the tin, has very pleasant room note like an aromatic, but only tastes slightly sweet with tobacco flavor? It would be called Copenhagen. When I opened the tin the strong tin scent of figs, raisins and other fruit was almost overwhelming. This would not be the same fig/raisin scent that comes from an aged VaPer, but rather a manually added one. However, it dries quickly and burns cleanly with a nice, soft sweet taste that doesn't overpower the tobacco. Is it an aromatic? In a pure sense yes, but it's unlike most aromatics on the market today. If you happen to be looking for a very light aromatic made at the usual high standard that is Sillims, than this is for you. Recommended.

Is this a sweet VaBur or a lightly cased Aromatic? I know yes the latter but this is on that line. The added flavor is pleasant but still you sense the quality tobacco right there.

Let it dry for a day or so. Easy cadence. Few re-lights. How to rate it?

I keep my 4 star reviews for blends that consistently are amazing. Yet I totally accept that my palate is not your palate! Copenhagen doesn’t rock my boat but there is that tobacco strength hanging out with the amaretto or whatever. It’s intriguing.

3.5 stars rounded down.

Lovely aroma in the tin, and favorable comment from the wife. Burn was steady, even, and thorough.

Did give me a bit of a headache - perhaps a visit from St. Nic too early in the morning?

The foregoing notwithstanding, greatly enjoyed it (though perhaps later in the day next go round...) and plan on including in my normal rotation.
