This old blend was written about in older issues of the Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris as an alternative to the cheap Virginia American tobaccos of the time as a richer, more flavorful smoke. That may be true, but Schermerhorn did not ramp up the taste much to me. I had fun opening the old lever top tin that was in my cellar, and the smell was quite good. It all went downhill from there though. You can always tell whether a Virginia was top shelf when you crack open an old tin and discover the aging had not darkened the leaf much and I found no sugar crystals to tantalize me.
