Rotary Rotary Navy Cut

(3.31)
A Virginia blend of three different lightly sweet and very mild tobaccos together with an exceptionally mild top flavour make this light and mellow tobacco, which can be smoked throughout the day. When fully rubbed out this tobacco develops its typical full bodied sweet aroma.

The bright Virginia offers some citrus and grass. The dark Virginias are more prominent with a bit of tangy, tart dark fruit along with some stewed fruit, a fair amount of earth, plus a minor wood and spice note. The sweet rum topping lightly sublimates the tobacco taste, but weakens a little after the half way point. The nic-hit is a step closer to mild than it is to medium. The flake is easily broken apart, and burns cool, clean, and fairly smooth. Won’t bite or get harsh even when pushed. It’s a little moist out of the tin, but doesn’t need dry time, though it will require a few relights as it burns a tad slow. The tobacco flavor is very consistent from start to finish. Leaves very little moisture in the bowl, and can burn to ash. Has a nice after taste and room note. Can easily be an all day smoke.

I bought one tin of this just to try, I wish I'd bought fifty, it seems to be available only in the US and the import tax imposed here make it very expensive, so I'm trying to make this one last as long as I can.

I didn't detect the Rum flavouring, as claimed by the blender, nor any Mahogany, what I did detect was a very good quality virginia flake of medium strength that is a great pleasure to smoke, sweet, without being to sweet, most certainly not "citrus-virginia-tang" an excellent all day working day tobacco that packs and burns well with no bite.

As for aging, it has certainly kept well, I popped the lid a good four or five months ago and it still hasn't turned to dust, or for that matter, showed any signs of needing rehydration.

I'm trying to find a taste comparison, and the best I can come up with is this :- more oomph than Sam Gawiths BB Flake and Rattray's Old Gowrie, and perhaps a little less than Rattray's Marlin Flake. Most probably on par with Sam Gawiths St James flake, but with a flavour and taste all it's own.

Although I would recommend this to a pipe smoker coming over to Flakes, or perhaps even to a new pipe smoker, there are no training wheels on this Tabac.

Well worth a try and worthy of it's 4 Stars.

I bought a tin of this several years ago. Smoked a bowl at the time, was underwhelmed, and put it away. It's been sitting in my tobacco box since, garnering no attention.. that is until tonight. Damn if this stuff didn't age magically. It is so so good. It has a nice deep Virginia sweetness that I crave. Went to buy more, and damn if it isn't out of production now. It's such a sad thing to watch such great tobaccos disappear so frequently, especially as of late. Guess I'm really going to have to savor the remains of my only tin!

Rotary - Rotary Navy Cut.

In the tin the flakes are actually breaking down the middle, so instead of two wows, there's four. The moisture from it's a little above medium, but doesn't need airing to smoke it fresh. The colour's a medium brown, with yellow flecks throughout.

As straight Virginia's go, this hits the spot for me. I get molasses from the rum, working perfectly with the almost 'sticky' fruitiness from the Virginias. But I don't note any actual alcoholic traits from it: sharpness or bitterness. It just gives a kind of syrupy sweetness. The fruitier Virginia definitely outweighs the sharper one, and is the leading taste until halfway. After half a bowl another flavour develops: doughy/bready. It burns cool to a steadfast white ash, needing hardly any maintenance throughout a bowl.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: very pleasant.

Rotary Navy Cut? A brilliant Virginia. Highly recommended:

Four stars.

This is my go-to baccy these days. I was a fan of Orlik Golden Sliced until I was introduced to Rotary Navy. It's got a better flavor and it's less bitey.

A fine Virginia flake tobacco with just a hint of mild sweetner. The tobaccos here I believe to be golden Va,red Va,and maybe mahogany. The color of the leaf is mostly golden with some brown and darker laced throughout. The thin slices are quite easy to rub out,and pack nicely. I smoked this in my BBB Lovat, and I thought the tobac performed really well. The virginia (IMO) is not tangy, but sweet and I actually taste the tobacco. The flavouring is not overpowering, but is a good marriage with the leaf. The flavouring also does not last in the pipe. I enjoy Rotary Navy flake often and have not been displeased with it. It is an all day smoke that doesn't ware me out,and leaves me wanting more.Good tobacco.
