Samuel Gawith Hansom Flake

(2.74)
Samuel Gawith Hansom Flake starts with select grades of Virginia that are naturally sweet. Then, a good measure of perique is added more for sweetness and depth than spice. A special Lakeland essence is added before pressing to enhance the natural tobacco flavors, and the pressure embeds the top note deep into the leaf. The result is a blend with a mellow sweetness, smooth flavor, and a singular aroma. For something different than other Samuel Gawith blends, Samuel Gawith Hansom Flake will deliver.

I tried very hard to like Hansom Flake. I rubbed it out, I folded and stuffed, I chopped it into little squares. I tried it in different pipes, but I stopped short of trying it in anything even approaching fancy for fear of fouling a nice pipe. I puffed fast, I puffed slow. I never tasted chocolate, cake, Lakeland Essence, fruit, or any pleasant combination of the above. Every so often I'd be treated to an occasional whisper of a very tasty but nondescript tobacco flavor, and then it would go right back to tasting like an ashtray. There's nothing complex about its taste, it's simply foul, and there's no way to describe it other than a mostly consistent essence of cigarette smoke. Reading other reviews, I'm tempted to think I got a bad batch, or perhaps the combination of flavors just melds into something I find personally offensive. It's hard to know what to think, but I've given this ample opportunity to impress and it hasn't, to say the least.

My first bowl of Hansom flake was off putting to say the least . I was not all impressed with my first taste of “Lakeland essence “ . I am a big fan of SG blends but this one was like smoking a flower . I put the remaing flakes in a jar . About a month later I am smoking this again to give it another chance . I dried it out some more to see if the topping would ease up some . It has helped some as the next couple of bowls were much better . The Virginias have some baked bread and hay and citrus which is nice . The Perique is quite evident with dark fruit and a little spice. It has a bit of a nic hit also . I won’t buy it again for sure . I would however buy St. James flake again because that is what I think a Vaper should taste like! …………Edited 8/25/2021 - This is not the usual lakeland you get from Gawith Hoggarth blends that I love . I am glad this is not where my lakeland tour ended . If you don’t like this get you some Ennerdale or Brown flake aromatic!!
