Cornell & Diehl Warped: The Haunting.

(3.00)
The Haunting is unlike many other cigar leaf-based pipe tobaccos, which often contain Latakia — instead, The Haunting consists primarily of cigar leaf and Virginia tobaccos, showcasing the delicious cigar notes and complementary sweetness of the Virginias. It's a blend that bridges the gap between cigars and pipes, catering to cigar and pipe smokers alike.

First smoke 10/14/2019

As I crack the tin I immediately smell the sweet Virginia's. They are plum/raisin'y with the grassiness sitting just under the leather of the Criollo leaf. Came perfectly moist. Packs with ease. Lights well and smokes so well. This blend is tasty. It's a perfect autumn weather tobacco. It is warm and rich. It has a fair amount of balanced sweetness. I can tell there's a lot of criollo; more cigar leaf than say in Habana Daydream. It works really well with the Virginias keeping the intensity in check. I can taste baking spice flavors: clove, nutmeg and a dash of cinnamon. The room aroma matches the profile and makes it very pleasant to sniff at as I smoke it. It gives me a feeling of the holidays and being at my grandmother's house as a kid as she baked pumpkin pies and ginger cookies. It is super smooth. It's a full smoke but isn't overly heavy. It does have the cigar like nic-hit but its manageable. I like this blend a lot. I think Kyle and Jeremy did a spectacular job. Delicious!

One Year Update 10/20/2020:

The tin (now jar) note has developed to show much more of the cigar leaf. There is more of a floralness and a tiny bit of citrus coming through that I didn't notice last October. The initial lights were delicious: light, subtly sweet and baking spicy; not unlike the last bowl I had last year. As with most blends I initially try fresh and revisit again later, the flavors are more unified. Whereas I tasted so much of the Criollo before, I get more Virginia now. I'm realizing how brilliant a choice this particular cigar leaf and Virginia combination are. They compliment each other very well especially with a year of age. The holiday baking spices are there still but it's more of an aftertaste. It's amazing! Mid bowl it gets deeper and more rich. I taste dark chocolate and cinnamon. The N hit is just right. I'm amazed at how well it stays lit and how beautiful and full the smoke is. I loved this blend last year and this year I'm doubly impressed. I'm looking forward to this jar of 2019 next year. Can't wait to chime in again then.

For what it’s worth, it was only after I ran 2 ½ bowls of The Haunting through my favorite cigar blend pipe that it began to smoke true, so evaluations start from that point. In the tin (10-07-20) short, fat ribbons and small chunks range from light red-brown to medium brown, smelling like a mild cigar, musty leather and loamy earth with very faint, fragrant, almost aromatic meadow grasses wafting above it. It handles and loads no problem, then it takes me a couple of chars to get it going. After that it smokes all the way down like a well-made cigar with regular, gentle tamping. Light snorks are fragrant and almost delicate, like the top tin note, and it takes a while for the body of the smoke to build. Body built, the smoke adds more and more of the bottom tin note along with light to medium cigar spices that include a little each of black, green and white pepper. It’s quite “woody”, a little sweet and fairly bitter. The VAs are wheat bready and a little yeasty. There is also a smell and taste of smoked meat that makes me wonder if there’s some undeclared KY here, as well. In the end, for me, it’s the smoke as a whole that rates rather than any one aspect of it. Strength is medium, likewise the tastes, taking into account it’s a cigar blend, after all. Room note smells nice to me, but, again, we’re talking cigar leaf. Aftertaste is a long trailing off of the best of the smoke, only it’s much sweeter. Delicious!

C&D’s The Haunting has some formidable competition in the cigar blend category. It holds its own by blazing its own path. Worth sticking with, IMO, and I’m pretty sure it will age well, too. 4 stars.

Quite simply one of the tastiest and most pleasant smokes I've ever had. The description says it's "primarily" virginias and criollo cigar leaf, but whatever else is in there, it's blended quite expertly to deliver a most delicious flavor. Sweet and woodsy, sometimes bordering on floral, The Haunting reminded me of a sweeter, creamier version of harsh and spicy VaPers like Bayou Night. The cigar leaf combined with the sweet virginias reminded me ever so briefly of the sweetness you get with now-aged McClelland Virginias and just a hint of rich spice toward the end. It also imparts thick clouds of smoke with an incredible mouth feel. Watching it, I thought the blend might have gotten its name from the white, ghostly billows emanating from my mouth and nose. The Haunting is a smooth and forgiving blend, and won't bite even with enthusiastic puffing, which is fortunate, because you'll be chugging like a steam engine in an effort to get more of the fantastic flavor into your system. If I have any criticism at all, it's that I do wish the nicotine content were a bit higher, but this stuff tastes so good that I'm willing to overlook what's probably necessary to get such great flavor. I liked The Haunting so much that I ordered the rest of the Warped line of pipe tobaccos. A rare 5-star treat.
