Obviously, this is designed to be a mixer. Has a lot of spice, stewed figs, plum, leather, earth, a light sourness, a little date note and a light fermentation. It’s strong, and has a very full taste smoked straight. Has plenty of nicotine as well. Won’t bite, but it will certainly tingle your tongue. Burns cool, clean and a little fast mainly due to the cut. The pieces tend to fall to the bottom of a baggie when used as a mixer, and for best effect, home blenders may find it works better when making plugs. Has a lingering, strong after taste. Needs very few relights, and leaves little dampness in the bowl. Use a very small pipe if you decide to smoke it straight.

Cornell & Diehl - Granulated Perique.

Spicy, strong, full of 'oomph'!

The granulated cut makes for 'grain' like pieces, and just the nose from the pouch indicates this is a pure, implacable, tobacco. Being from bulk the moisture's good.

Like I said at the start, the smoke isn't for the fainthearted. Sure, should you have a death wish, smoke a bowl neat! Joking aside, I quite enjoy a small bowl, neat, in the morning; imminent nicotine hit, plenty of spice to wake me up, and no nonsense! Albeit, I wouldn't wish for a large bowl! Considering the toxicity of it, adding a pinch to a weaker blend should transcend it to the strength required! It burns without question; cool, even, and mid-speed. I get zero tongue bite.

Nicotine: MORE than enough. Room-note: rank.

Granulated Perique? As good a quality Perique as you can get. Highly recommended:

Four stars.

C&D Granulated Perique has a jar note that is not for the faint of heart. ROTT it had so much ammonia in it that the first thing I thought of was cat urine. Now with 8 months in the jar it still has some faint resemblance but the tobacco notes have started to come through. Smoked straight it is a full bodied strong bowl that has a nic hit that comes close to Sam Gawith's Brown Rope #4 when new. Dark fruit notes with figs out front, and some plum. It is very earthy, with a fairly strong note of fermentation and very spicy. Add to anything to strengthen the blend. I even had a 50/50 bowl of this and SG's brown rope #4 and it did not lower the strength level at all. Brown is a big enough blend to handle this at 50/50 but others I had to back off on. I found I really liked Capstan Blue at a 25/75 ratio; it moved the strength up to a solid med. and added that touch of dark fruits and spice to an otherwise uncomplicated blend. The room note is a lot like the jar note, I would not smoke it straight inside, even if I could. Still even with this slight issue this is an easy 4 stars.

Everyone who likes blends with perique should buy this, smoke a small bowl straight and try adding it to some blends to get a feel for what perique does to a blend. Also, perhaps that would end the reviews of VaPer blends where people credit the plummy, figgy whateverness to the perique. That is the virginia folks, not the perique.

The smell in the tin (or bag in this case) could easily pass for straight cow manure and will tingle your nose like vinegar. It is very earthy, fermented and just a touch of some kind of sweetness in the background. Adds a wonderful earthiness and spice to any blend. A must try.

Granulated Perique: Yep, it's perique and I like it.

This tobacco smokes exactly like the Arcadian perique I know and love. It tastes of fermented/aged tobacco (similar to an oscuro cigar), with a strong spicy undertone and unparalleled earthiness. The tin note can be quite overpowering in a mostly good way. The granulated cut is just a short ribbon and the tobacco is a bit moist right out of the tin—unlike any C&D tobacco I have ever tried.

Adding a pinch of this stuff to a bowl can spice up any blend.
