Seattle Pipe Club Wild Man

(3.00)
This is a medium bodied blend of rich and smoky Cyprian Latakia, complex and exotic Orientals, and select, sweet Virginias, pressed into an easy-to-prepare crumble cake. The aroma will remind you of incense, but the flavor is smooth, smoky, and intriguingly unique.

SPC is one of those blenders that I haven't really explored. I've tried Plum Pudding which was good and may warrant another try, and I've tried the Bourbon Barrel Aged, and Deception Pass. So when I was reading the tin description of this ton in my local pipe shop I thought it sounded interesting enough to try.

The tin looks awesome and is actually one of the reasons I picked it up in the first place, thou got I know I shouldn't judge a tin by it's appearance. Once I opened it up I came across 8 or so tin crumble cakes with some some loose tobacco at the bottom of the tin. The cakes are a nice mixture of mottled dark browns. If I stick my nose in the jar I smell sour and tangy Orientals, sweet, bready and tangy Red Virginias, and the soft smokiness of Latakia. Right out of the tin I find that it's at the prefect dryness. It crumbles well, packs well, and lights well.

Once lit the first thing I taste is a smooth and creamy Latakia. I think it's about a little stronger in the Latakia department than other Englishes I like to smoke. The Orientals are very much up front too. A deep incense like quality, with a sour herbalness. The Red Virginias provide a sweet, bready base.

The taste is a medium hedging on a medium-full. It fills your mouth. The strength is medium. It's an easy going, all day smoke that's perfect for cooler weather. The room note is strong, so it's not one to smoke if those in your life don't like the smell of tobacco.

The Tin Art is great and has the usual great story line I expect from SPC.

It's defined as an English on the tin. Popping a 2oz tin, there were 8 large "chunks" of Krumble Kake without hardly any broken chunks. Smell was Latakia and Oriental forward. Moisture content was great as I was able to pick off a few pieces and easily load a Canadian.

Lighting was quick. Char light, then it picked up great with no issues.

The taste to me is at the light was VERY oriental forward, complimented by a campfire Latakia smokiness. Midway through the bowl it became more creamy as the Red VA came to the table. The orientals have a peppery taste that would make me think there was Perique hiding in there somewhere (not listed). The bottom third of the bowl lost some of the spice and finished with more of the creamy taste.

No tongue bite even without any drying time. Burns well down to ash with no real effort besides a tamp or two. Mild nicotine in my book, I could feel it but not a powerhouse.

This one could take the place of some of my departed McC Orientals in my rotation. It will probably be more of a fall/winter blend to me.

Classic Latakia blend, English, Balkan or Oriental as you prefer to define it. I’d like to hear a discussion about it. Anyway in this mixture Latakia is leading (there is a lot of it) and Virginia and Orientals complement and support. Latakia is very intense, smoky, at times covering and enveloping. Quite monothematic in taste, but extraordinary for Latakia lovers. Really excellent quality. But absolutely not recommended for people who can’t stand Latakia. In my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is 8 and three stars.

The Cyprian Latakia adds a smoky/woodsy flavor that can be detected on and off. A little intermitant for a pressed crumble cake. The main competitor for me is the sour/zesty Turkish and Orientals.

This is a nice pungant, sour/smokey English with lots of flavor. The Orientals are in lead the entire way.

Some haven't enjoyed this as much as others, but I did very much. My taste sensors aren't super sharp like others, and that may be why the inconsistancy didn't bother me. Plus, I love sour Orientals.
