Charatan - Flake.

Another blend I've been smoking for the tobacconist I write for.

Often offered as a 'clone' for Dunhill Flake? Well, big words! That was quite a revered smoke, so let's see if that's rhetorical nonsense!

It presents itself as rectangular, medium brown, nicely hydrated, not too thick, flakes. I usually fully rub and to do so with these takes no effort.

The moisture, and fine consistency rubbing achieves, enables simple ignition. From first light I get an upbeat, Virginia, smoke. For the first third it's a lemon, citrus, flavour which leads. Once the initial third has passed a honey-like sweetness joins in, somewhat placating the fervent 'zest' from the citrus. Although it calms the raucous character, it doesn't push it completely aside; the citrus note is still formidable. It burns at a medium speed, and after smoking over half a tin I haven't had a single bite.

Nicotine: medium. Room-note: not the best.

Charatan Flake? Well, as for it's resemblance to Dunhill Flake I can only go from notes here; which often state that as citrusy and sweet. So, that said, I don't think it's that far away! But, even though I can't smoke DHF to compare, I'll still recommend Charatan's version. It would be a smashing smoke for a morning in the summer:

Three stars.

Appearance: a 50 gram tin released in early 2022. The blend is a smooth, neat flake the color of driftwood pine. The humidity is slightly excessive, I dried it for about half an hour. The ‘wafers’ themselves are a "standard" size, 40 by 65 millimeters, and being a millimeter-and-a-half thick, are suitable for stuffing rolled or broken.
Flavor: sweetish mixed grass and dried hay, fresh wheat bread, a faint note of baked apples, an even fainter woody note. A light topping adds to this bouquet with a whiff of spices - coriander and a faint note of cinnamon.
Taste: Initially wheat dough, a slight herbal sweetness and a touch of citrus, a faint woody note that grows as you smoke. The flavor of the blend is inexpressive and simple, in bents a little more accentuated on the woody note, which increases towards the middle of the pipe, becoming somewhat predominant in the flavor. Straight pipes, on the other hand, smooth it out until the end of smoking. Except for this trifle, the tobacco is soft, does not have sharp edges and does not bite, is not prone to overheating, although, like any pure Virginia blend, does not like fast smoking, starting to burn and losing flavor. The strength of the blend is not even average, a large pipe even in thirty-degree heat did not give me any inconvenience related to nicotine hit. The tobacco burns into light gray ash without lumps, leaving a little moisture in the pipe even after drying. The aftertaste of tobacco is subtle, woody.
Smoke from tobacco in the room is barely noticeable, has a light woody flavor.
What's the bottom line? Once again, I'm convinced that our perception of tobaccos is subjective. Two different blenders at Kohlhase & Kopp took Dunhill flake and, wanting to fill a gap in the market, created their own reading of this recipe, guided only by their own nose and tongue. The results are very different, both from the original and from each other. But everyone can choose a flake with nuances to taste. The main thing is not to compare it with the original ?

Tin note of mild sweet grass and spices. The Yellowish tan and brown flakes are on the dry side, rubs out easily. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and consistent, with notes of wood, spiced bread, mildly sweet, grassy, earth, floral, strong hay, mildly spicy, a mild citrus background note, and a peppery retro. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
