Charatan Royal Escape Mixture
(2.50)
Highest quality bronzed Virginia leaves are carefully conditioned and are added to rich, heavy-bodied Virginias, noted for their aroma. A unique flavor is added to the final blend to enhance the subtle and piquant aroma.
Notes: Charatan released Royal Escape Mixture to fill the gap left by Dunhill discontinuing Royal Yacht.

I actually really enjoyed this.
I’m rubbish at smoking virginias and tend to favour English Balkan blends.
I am constantly pursuing the perfect smoke as most on here are.
The best smoke I have had to date was of EMP out of a Mr. Brog briar on a cold day in my shed.
The smoke was thick and it was the ultimate relaxation experience - every sip was pure pure pleasure.
I have been chasing a similar experience ever since but always always struggled with virginias owing to my lack of experience.
I have tried several - all the usual suspects, including royal yacht which is of course topped with a fruity flavour much like Royal Escape.
Even though my virginia smokes have been less than satisfying certain flavours have lodged and I find myself craving it from time to time.
I heard Royal Yacht had been discontinued so on a family camping trip I picked up a tin of Royal Escape as I had no pipe or tobacco with me and fancied a smoke.
Smoked fresh and outside it was much like previous virgina experiences - couldn’t coax a thick smoke or the typical grassy tangy flavours without overheating the pipe.
Fast forward a few week and with an open, hardly smoked tin on the side I retired to the shed, picked a cob, freshly cleaned it and loaded it.
I really concentrated and packed very very carefullly in a couple of loads with a light press.
Charred, waited and re lit.
It was actually pretty easy in the cob to get this tobacco to where I wanted to.
Nice thick flavourful smoke - the topping enhances the experience for me and I’m sure it will until I become better at smoking virginias and retrospectively scorn myself for enjoying this so much.
For my money it’s a great starter blend for Virginia virgins - decent level of nicotine but from memory, below Royal Yacht in that area.
Will continue to smoke this stuff out of cobs and reserve my briars first when I fancy a Balkan or English blend.
If you’re like me and have been smoking pipes on and off for a few years but haven’t quite cracked virginias then try this in a cob.
It benefit from ageing and working the smoke up to a good level slowly.
Doesn’t bite if you smoke it right.
Doesn’t taste like an aromatic.
Probably not an all day smoke - but good in warmer weather.
Recommended to people like me.

I'm not all that optimistic about the new Charatan subs for the discontinued Dunhill blends; I suspect that the same falling demand that killed off the Duhill blends will soon see off these too. Let's enjoy them while we can, though. This is a reasonable replacement for Royal Yacht, I think (though why did Charatan choose such a peculiar name for it?). Cool, slow burning, reliable and well behaved with a plummy topping that is noticeable without being too obtrusive. Quite strong, too, though certainly acceptable as an all day smoke. I don't think it's quite as strong and full-bodied as the original Royal Yacht.
Royal Yacht was a favourite of Georges Simenon, and I think he would have approved of this. It isn't a perfect copy, but it's close enough.

Touted as a replacement for Dunhill Royal Yacht with a similar plummy tin note laid over otherwise unadorned high quality Virginias.
A cool, strong voluminous smoke. Perhaps not quite as high in Vitamin N as the original, perhaps not quite the depth of flavour of the original (but then I am comparing brand new vs an aged tin).
Regardless, a top notch straight Virginia in its own right.
Is it really Royal Yacht? No, but it's a very good Virginia blend in its own right.
