At first whiff one would think Sutliff is trying to take over where McClelland left off. But, I don't think that sour tang is from fermentation but the addition of sodium acetate or diacetate which is a food ingredient that imparts an acidic sour-salty aroma and taste e.g. salt & vinegar potato chips. It's different than acetic acid from fermentation and taste to me(and others) almost metallic with an undertone of gun powder. I hate it. This is a common ingredient used for decades in the tobacco industry and Sutliff uses it across their bulk cavendish blends. It just ruins tobacco especially aromatics where one may be smoking the likes of a maple cavendish with those metallic sour notes coming through. It just doesn't work. And it doesn't work with this tobacco of otherwise good red virginia. Fortunatley, it doesn't seem to come through the smoke which suggests to me it is being applied as a topping after made into a cake and sliced. Smoke wise, very mild for a virginia, light on the nicotine, simple and straight forward. Sutliff is trying to deceptively pass this off as a matured tobacco which it isn't. Get rid of that chemical additive and perhaps add a bit of a sweatener to reinforce the darker virginia flavor and then it would really be something.

Sutliff- Red Va crumble kake

18 reviews total for this one huh, I really want to like this blend, I’ve smoked it on occasion for the last year and a half but each time it’s still not what I want it to be.

The red VA’s which are sweet, are overpowered with a vinegar taste, that automatically just takes the sweetness from sugar cane, to Splenda, that artificial sweetness with that weird salty aftertaste. This comes in a kake format in two slabs that break apart easily, give this time to dry as the vinegar solution it’s bathed in needs to dry.

I can’t recommend this out of the tin, heck I can’t recommend it 1 year down the road either or in a jar, I cannot recommend this in a car, no I will not recommend this to you. Sorry sutliff only 1 star for you.

I will try this again next year. Till then see ya!

This tobacco smells great in the tin -- and comes as others have mentioned, in two large cakes that are very easy to break apart and fill your pipe with.

For me it was a very sour and sweet smoke, leaving quite a bit of aftertaste, almost a mouth-coating. It burned well, but was damp from the tin, and even after drying it burned wet.

No matter what pipe I tried, smoking cadence or even lighting method, I couldn't ever really enjoy this. After smoking a little more than half a tin, I gave up.

The tin was a gift from a pipe club member, as he didn't like it. I know I'm in the minority here, but I'd give this away too. After smoking this I felt I had to shave my tongue, eat or drink anything else or at the least smoke something good.

Look elsewhere for better Virginias that aren't so citrus (sour) laden, damp or one-dimensional.

For a red virginia leaf, this crumble cake was disappointing. Tin note was vinegar. Flavor fell flat. Some spice, but no other flavors. I missed the typical virginia sweetness. Not recommended.
