I have never smoked the old Dunhill blend from the '60s/'70s, so I can't compare the McConnell with it. I can compare it with the '00s Murray made version, though.
The Murray version had, for me, a weird topping which reminded me of Twinings Blackcurrant Tea. A topping which, according to many, was absent in the Dunhill original, and which I didn't like too much. This "clone" luckily doesn't have that topping: there is a rich dark fruity sweetness in the tin, but it seems almost completely natural.
That said, it's a decent blend: the Orientals seem to me much more evident than in the Dunhill, and overall it's a very smooth, very well behaved tobacco, that smokes very regularly from beginning to end, with no fuss and moderate evolution. Some grassy notes, a hint of red Virginia sweetness, and soft spice from the Orientals: pleasant, never aggressive... just a bit boring, a bit cigarettish. And here's where personal taste comes in: I am not a fan of blends with only Virginia and Orientals but without a pinch of Perique or Latakia. I find that they often taste a bit bland to my taste, apart from some unique tasty exceptions like GLPease Cairo.
If you like the softness of Va+Orientals, and if you like a quiet and solid blend, give it a try... just don't expect anything spectacular.
