Living in the PNW, right off the puget sound, this was an absolute must try. Ive been day dreaming of this blend for some time and finally got my grubby paws on it. I must say there was a little disappointment on my part. I didnt get as much "english" as i was hoping. Here and there i got that english zing, and the topping/flavor was almost barely noticeable. Good thing? Sure. Bad thing? No...not really. Apparently....its the room note that does it. The wife ran up to me saying how good it smells, while taking the pipe out of my hand(without asking) to take some puffs. I almost didnt get it back either. She immediately caught the maple notes and how it smells smokey too. Almost half way through is when you start to get those sweet smokey bitter notes, that i can only assume isnt from the addied topping. Burns cool all the way through. I wish this had a little more.....something to it. Body isnt the word. Strength, may be it. Flavor wise.......this is something special that i need at least another pound of.

Okay . . . mixed results with this one. My impressions have been quite variable depending on the pipe. In my best briar, this earns a solid three stars, with a nice creamy texture and vanilla custard flavor from the Cavendish. In other pipes, Savinelli 673 (6mm charcoal filter), an old English Hardcastle bulldog (no filter), and meerschaum, not so good. The negative smokes all had the same thing in common: an initial light that made me physically recoil. Flavors of burnt marshmallow (propyl humectant!), burning plastic (no, there weren’t pieces of baggie in the bowl), scorched brown sugar, muted Latakia with flavor of burnt fat/grill scrapings.
The positive smokes were almost like a different blend, with smooth and savory flavors (like creamy brown gravy), toasted wheat bread, and subtle and pleasing teasers of sweet vanilla, brown sugar and maple. Even so, in this style of Aromatic English I much prefer Solani White and Black (four stars), in part because it tastes cleaner being based with Virginia and Latakia (without the Burley). I also somewhat prefer Boswell’s Magnum (I give that 3.5 stars). Neither of those varied so wildly when using different pipes.
Bottom line: be wary of the high rating and start with just a couple ounces until you are sure this is going to be something you enjoy!
