Garryowen is the first plug I smoked that wasn't made by one of the Gawiths; and proved somewhat of a revelation. A plug tobacco doesn't neccesarily have to become the Incredible Hulk upon the first light.
Rather, Garryowen is a pleasantly sweet-tasting Virginia leaf smoke. The sweetness has certainly been enhanced, but not by much, and not in a gross way. I would rank the smoking experience as being about on par with S.Gawith's Full Virginia Flake, or Rattray's Hal o' the Wind. The bother of preparing the plug, if it may be considered that, is counter-balanced by the extra coolness and the extra time in the smoking.

I only tried this one once back in the 80s and loved it. My notes were not very good regarding where I purchased the plug, but I think it was a stateside order rather than a trade. A very strong tobacco with some sort of enhancement that I enjoyed. The plug was moist, difficult to prepare, and needed a lot of relights as I smoked. The strong sweetness, however artificial, blended well with the actual Virginia leaf. My notes indicated a bowlful left me satisfied most of the rest of the day, so, it must stick to the palate pretty well after smoking.
