4noggins Tewksbury Hobbit's Weed Match

(2.55)
A full flavoured blend with fire-cured cavendish added for mellowing the robust burley. A mild cherry flavoring and a dash of vanilla is added for a semi-sweet, pleasant, slow burning smoke.

EDIT [I decided to knock this down to 2 stars. It became just too much of a strict cherry product that was beginning to ghost the pipe and began tasting of a cheap bulk blend].

I recently made a batch of do it yourself Hobbit's Weed from the online recipe and was quite pleased with the results, so upon placing a 4noggins order, I thought I would see if their blend differed much (though I'm likely smoking the same thing).

The bag aroma is much heavier on the cherry juice, leaving no room for any of the vanilla or other flavors to weasel into your nose. Still, it was a great smelling cherry. The mix was the same equal parts of Black Cavendish and Burley, though the leaves were paper thin (like fish flakes). Ignition couldn't of been easier and the bowl had zero relights, which meant a hobbit could wander away from the fireplace, never needing a lighter. The taste (for an Aromatic) was phenomenal. The cherry was still in the forefront, but now some of the sweet vanilla was able to creep in.

I have to say I preferred 4noggins take on the weed versus making my own, for being less hassle, slightly better tasting, and being one of the best burns I have ever had.

Right of the bat, this is a mild aromatic imo. Not in a bad way but if you want something that completely Över takes you with flavor there is other blends that would be better for you. There is definitely vanilla in this. It drives the buss imo. Then we get the Cherry. It’s there and the two makes a great couple. It’s consistent thru the entire bowl even if it gets a little bit boring two thirds down. It’s a nice round aromatic that I believe most would appreciate.

Hobbit's Weed match is a chunky ribbon blend, that arrives slightly wet in the pouch. The pouch aroma reminds me of the Skoal Long Cut Cherry blend I used to chew in high school, with a vanilla undertone. While is does smell artificial, it doesn't smell chemical. if that even makes sense.

This is a bit sticky on arrival. I prefer a light pack and tamp a little firmer as the smoke progresses, as this does swell a bit during the charring light. The topping on this reminds me a lot of the old McClelland Blend, M-27 Three Cherry.

The Cherry stands out the most in this, with a slight vanilla softness. The tobacco seems to be of good quality, as there is no roughness, no tongue bite, and it doesn't become acrid nor ashy even at the bottom of the bowl. The aftertaste is short lived, but pleasant. The room note is superb. This has been a favorite before bed blend for me, as it's not too heavy or strong on nicotine. All in all, a solid 3.5 stars for this great aromatic from 4 Noggins!

Another nice 4noggins blend. I didnt like this at first, but perhaps my love for the halfling's leaf has clouded my mind, for it has grown on me. The cherry is somewhat artificial tasting, but nowhere near the point of cough medicine. The vanilla is mild and works well to liven and enrich the cherry. Not many tobacco notes to discern except the fire cured cavendish adds an element of depth reminiscent of the fire cured used in 1Q. It burns alright. Has a bit of a nip if smoked fast. I like it; I find it bright and refreshing on the palate. A nice change of pace for the tastebuds. A good one to have an oz or two sitting around should the mood arise. It seems a lot of pipe smokers are Tolkien fans, so I doubt my recommendation is necessary for those interested in trying this one, nevertheless. If you don't like cherry aromatics, then I don't know what you're doing this far into this review. If you do like cherry aros, then sit-back on the field of victory and enjoy a well earned comfort. 3 stars. Recommend.

I am looking for a berry flavored aromatic to add to my rotation so have been trying different blends that have been recommended. I enjoyed this blend but the flavoring was a bit heavy for my taste.

I knew going in that this had cherry flavoring, but I guess I was hoping for a more subtle application than what we get here. Somebody also mentioned banana nut bread, which I like, so that was another reason I wanted to try this. My first evaluation over a year ago noted a sweet confectionary aroma and a flavor that reminded me of a Luden's cherry lozenge. No banana nut bread for me. At least it burned cool, was not as sickly sweet as Ole Shenandoah Appalachian Berry, and left no goopy residue.

To reduce the overt cherry flavor I tried blending half n' half with some Lane White Burley, then some Orlik Golden Virginia, then some Edgeworth cube cut Burley, and no matter what I paired it with the candy taste dominated (plus I wasted a lot of good tobaccos in the attempt).

Now, a year later, after being untouched in a mason jar, I gave it one last chance at redemption. The jar note was of overly ripe (almost rotting) black cherries, while the flavor had now taken on an unctuous combination of fruit cocktail syrup and cream soda. It must have had a good dose of humectant because it was still moist enough to require some drying out - though that did not help diminish the unctuous flavor.

I'd say I've done my due diligence with this one. The remainder of my supply goes into the compost bin!

Just tried this for the first time. Super smooth, could smoke this all day.

Creamy and flavorful.

If you enjoy aromatics this needs to be in your pipe.

I won't and can't say if it matches the original. I never experienced the original tobacco, so this is only my thoughts on this blend.

Pleasant smell out of the bag. No chemical smell. A definite cherry vanilla smell though. Sweet cherry taste right up front with a mild vanilla flavor in the back. I loved the mix. No nicotine hit at all. A smooth cool smoke with 1 or 2 relights.
Just like a hobbit. Pleasant demeanor with no harshness. Great for gatherings due due to the pleasing room note. A happy little blend for company. Especially before an arduous trip.
Bilbo, Samwise, Merry and Pippin approved. Frodo is on the fence.

Taste the way a cheap cherry candle smells. Chemical and fake. No self respecting Hobbit would allow this in his house, let alone smoke it in his favorite pipe. Try Paladin instead, its a superior tobacco.

Edit: This is the only blend I've reviewed. Also, this is the only blend I restock by the pound for my own personal use. It's definitely my favorite. I'm changing the review from "recommended," to "highly recommended;" the room note from "pleasant," to "very pleasant;" ultimately changing this from a 3 star review, to 4 stars. Here's why:

I've white-ashed this right down! A perfect smoke to the finish!

Or, to stop and start again at work on break, without nasty residues. It's cool-smoking, with plenty of moisture to vaporize. No crackle and burn from me; it's sweet, but didn't burn too hot unless provoked.

I love smoking this tobacco on my drive - 35 minutes, no relight, that's exceptional for me. I can keep about any pipe lit, but this blend does it on its own.

It's quite aromatic through all phases: the bag, the pinch, the dry unlit tobacco in the bowl, the first light, and final light are all pleasant and not overpowering.

It's quite flavorful, though not "complex." The cherry flavor is big, and could have been overpowering, but I'd describe it as a well harmonized lead note. This is a fruity, warm, and sweet bouquet. The other reviews accurately point to the flavors. I taste vanilla, for sure; there's gotta be cocoa, too.

I like to try more than 4 blends per month. I'll give most any tobacco blend a whirl.
