Mac Baren Capstan Original Navy Cut
(3.41)
This blend is a composition of select, ripe Virginia tobaccos whose citrus and grassy notes go brilliantly with the natural sweetness. A must try for everyone who appreciates a good, straightforward Virginia blend.
Notes: Originally produced by W.D. and H.O. Wills, now re-released by MacBaren.
According to the Tolkien estate, this was J.R.R. Tolkien's favorite tobacco.

Quite long time from my last encounter with Capstan Medium (now Capstan Original) Navy cut. This is now happening since my nearest local tobacconist was displaying the last tin, I thought it was chance to grab it and review.
I don't detect any heavy changes between the older version (Imperial) and the current (Orlik) , thus CMNC remains one of my favourite classic flakes to keep in stable rotation. A true example of plain and uncomplicated medium Va, with the most discrete top dressing. Easy lighting and burning, cool and refreshing smoke.
And I do agree with Noorrmm's review back in 2002 in saying that it's a rewarding smoke both casually or contemplatively.
What keeps me from rating 4* is that it starts “really” too plain, the true game starting from the second third.

3 stars upon trust of what the British version of this truly legendary flake used to be. Now it's made in Denmark and don't know how does it taste. It's plain, good virginias, with just a little flavour of dried fruits, nothing else. It packs well, smokes cool and dry if you leave it on the air for a while. Maybe a bit too "normal", but it's the standard against which you judge every Virginia flake. A Classic.

This is a nice medium level Virginia flake and is certainly much improved over its brother- Capstan Mild! This flake actually has some flavor and even a tiny bit of complexity. It's great in the morning with a good cup of English Breakfast tea. It doesn't bite and its aroma is a pleasure. This is what is so very wonderful about the diversity in pipe tobacco. A great tobacco for any situation! I had to order this from Synjeco in Switzerland, but sometimes it's worth the extra money to be a part of these sublimely perfect moments.

One of my favorite tobaccos for years. I've now shifted to Paul Olsen's "Plantagenet", but still smoke Capstan Medium (or Full) on occasion.

As far as I'm concerned-the way this tobacco is described, is exactly what you get.And I go along with all that has been said in the "positive" review's before me. It's easily rubbed out & light's very easily. It give's me a nice uncomplicated smoke, but with a satisfying flavour & doesn't bite the tongue. It leaves my pipe nice & clean, with a nice lightly grey ash.In it's class I'll give it 3 star's out of 4.

Talking about straight virginias, i´ve smoked Full Virginia Flake, Peterson Flake and now Capstan blue.
I don´t know for you guys but Capstan was the best one. Followed by FVF then Peterson flake. I could feel that semi-sweet smoke since the very first light, the citrus note was really present, something from dark fruits, its body was medium, the second part of the bowl gets really interesting with different nuances, sometimes figs but this dance made me think it was the topping or just the good quality virginias, for me it´s hard to say.
It deserves a solid 3 stars and I´d buy it again.
Go for it !

Aroma of fresh tobacco was woody, oily and nutty. This surprise me, because I had expected blend of pure (mainly but not only) yellow Virginias. I do not know, if it comes from toping or from tobacco. Flake was easy to prepare with accurate moisture.
Smoke was cool, more earthy than sweet with pleasant aftertaste. Nuttiness was not so obvious. In general very like other TOP VA blends.
Need several relights, do not leave dottle.

If you really like straight virginias, this has to be one of the best out there. Very nice tin (reminded me of old cigarette tins) and flakes. Although the strength is mild to medium, the taste is there.Very satisfying natural grassy notes. An easygoing smoke.

I Give this a 7 out of 10. Excellent at any time of day. It is easy to rub, pack, and smoke or just fold into your pipe.

Before I try Capstan I heard about lots of good reviews. Upon opening the tin the presentation is neat, even light brown flake, and it's easy to work with. The strength is on the lighter side of medium, but the flavor develops as the bowl goes. It reminds me of Dunhill's Flake, clear and bright, with a little deeper tangy and never bites.
