Mac Baren Capstan Original Navy Cut
(3.41)
This blend is a composition of select, ripe Virginia tobaccos whose citrus and grassy notes go brilliantly with the natural sweetness. A must try for everyone who appreciates a good, straightforward Virginia blend.
Notes: Originally produced by W.D. and H.O. Wills, now re-released by MacBaren.
According to the Tolkien estate, this was J.R.R. Tolkien's favorite tobacco.

One of my favorite tobaccos for years. I've now shifted to Paul Olsen's "Plantagenet", but still smoke Capstan Medium (or Full) on occasion.

As far as I'm concerned-the way this tobacco is described, is exactly what you get.And I go along with all that has been said in the "positive" review's before me. It's easily rubbed out & light's very easily. It give's me a nice uncomplicated smoke, but with a satisfying flavour & doesn't bite the tongue. It leaves my pipe nice & clean, with a nice lightly grey ash.In it's class I'll give it 3 star's out of 4.

I was able to smoke a ten year old tin of this . It had a fruity smell in the tin , but the flavor was not heavily artificial . I'd smoke it again but I wouldn't stock it in the cellar without smoking it some more .It was intriguing , but not exciting . Not bad in any way though .

Talking about straight virginias, i´ve smoked Full Virginia Flake, Peterson Flake and now Capstan blue.
I don´t know for you guys but Capstan was the best one. Followed by FVF then Peterson flake. I could feel that semi-sweet smoke since the very first light, the citrus note was really present, something from dark fruits, its body was medium, the second part of the bowl gets really interesting with different nuances, sometimes figs but this dance made me think it was the topping or just the good quality virginias, for me it´s hard to say.
It deserves a solid 3 stars and I´d buy it again.
Go for it !

Aroma of fresh tobacco was woody, oily and nutty. This surprise me, because I had expected blend of pure (mainly but not only) yellow Virginias. I do not know, if it comes from toping or from tobacco. Flake was easy to prepare with accurate moisture.
Smoke was cool, more earthy than sweet with pleasant aftertaste. Nuttiness was not so obvious. In general very like other TOP VA blends.
Need several relights, do not leave dottle.

This isn't as citrusy as other VA's, but has a little more depth and doesn't bite. Unique flavor notes include more a floral aspect than citrus. Packs in the bowl well as a flake tobacco should. No moisture and burns hotter like a typical VA but not bad.
My fav straight VA right now.

This is similar to FVF and tastes like a thick soup, which most Straight Virginians can't do (they lose moisture in their mouth when they eat it).
This is easier to light than FVF, I can fold and rotate into the pipe slowly smoke, friends who need nicotine will not be disappointed. It's 1/3 cheaper than FVF and easier to procure.

I have been disapointed by this offering. My tin had 8 years and 8 months of aging (according to MB's date) and despite this, the flakes had not darkened much and the overall taste has yielded very little complexity or nuances. I was definitively expecting more after such aging!

If you really like straight virginias, this has to be one of the best out there. Very nice tin (reminded me of old cigarette tins) and flakes. Although the strength is mild to medium, the taste is there.Very satisfying natural grassy notes. An easygoing smoke.

Nice clean Virginia. Easy to smoke mild tobacco that’s good for a warm sunny day. Thin even cut on the flakes make it convenient to fold and stuff when rubbing out isn’t practical.
